These two both have excellent points. I can see why Hitchens would support a war against fascism in the middle east because he`s a liberal hawk. But on the other side of the equasion is Galloway`s point that the private enterprise is getting very rich off the back of the war.

Listen very closely though because they will both try to obviscate the questions by speaking around the issue and bringing in unrelated issues.

Yes, I see your points, and agree to a point (the frustrating thing about admiring both Hitchens and Galloway is having to admit their ample faults as well).

As for Galloway`s style, I think we can attribute that to some degree to his generation. He was born and raised at a time and in a culture where that style of political oration was de rigueur, very "Old School". If you listen to speeches by the great British PMs and MPs, or American activists and politicians like Dr. King, you find similar hyperbole, repetition and preachy-ness.

Im just into hating my enemies - I dont pity them.
Thats the main point i always give to hitchens, to try and be understanding of people trying to kill you is mad.
Although I do think the relationship with the West and the East is complex and cant be nailed down to 1 or even a few hundred problems.

^^ Yes, Hitchens is too English for that. Galloway has that Celtic fulminating going on. You win points as much for volume as you do for logic (and lacking logic, just go for volume!).

Hitchens is more likely to just mutter crudely but quietly at you over the rim of gin & tonic, like the lecherous drunk uncle everyone tries to ignore at family reunions. My hero.

Tho i think the hitch is at his best in religious debates - especially vs his christian younger brother!

On the subjects of Atheism and freedom of speech, Hitchens is aces, but when it comes to politics and war, he`s a total shit. I don`t know much about Galloway, but what I`ve seen of him, I find refreshing. We need more people who say what they really think, and with passion.

and as a middle-eastern myself, I can tell you that Galloway was SPOT ON!

I am a well-educated person, I lived in more than 4 different countries in 3 different continents, so believe me when I tell you this about the region where I lived most of my adult life,
There are rarely any people who are terrorists or who want to blow themselves up in the middle east. Those are the smallest of minorities there. There are, HOWEVER, a lot of people who are willing to sacrifice their lives to defend their country, their land, their families, and their freedoms.

To give you an idea, imagine this: USA government gets corrupted and becomes a dictatorship (it`s not that far-fetched, now, is it?). Would you like, say China, to free you? How would you feel with Chinese troops landing on your soil and imposing THEIR freedom and democracy on you? and although you may hate your unjust government, wouldn`t you fight against that with your life?
