Dune

David Lynch's 1984 adaptation of Frank Herbert's epic 1965 science fiction novel "Dune". "In the year 10,191 AD the universe is dominated by the presence of the spice Melange which extends life, expands consciousness, and can fold space. It exists in only one place, the desert planet of Arrakis, also known as Dune."

Dune is by far the longest sci-fi book ever writen, its as long as the bible, thousands and thousands of pages. Thank god someone made it into a movie cause the books arent really acessible, way too long

the entire dune series needs to be put onto film.

but please.... not by david lynch. I love the guys work, but his style just doesnt sit right with me for sci-fi stuff

The books were great and the film manages to capture the feel and outright eeriness of the books better than the two miniseries.
The music is top-notch but some of the characters are badly cast ( Leto Atreides as the best example, Jürgen Prochnow? what were they thinking? ), completely out of character (Baron Harkonnen was lacking the cunning he shows in the books ) or simply a 2d cutout of their characters in the books ( Piter de Vries for example. They have the excellent Brad Dourif but without having read the books you simply don`t know anything about him).

All in all a rather flawed masterpiece.
They are making another Dune film for 2010 apparently, wonder how that`ll turn out.

The first Dune book is a classic...but they go downhill quickly from there. Anybody who reads the series beyond Children of Dune is a masochist.

The David Lynch movie ain`t too bad for what it is...a severely butchered mirage of the original work propped up by some great casting.

The original Sci-Fi mini series did far better justice to the story but, obviously, they didn`t have the budget that Lynch did.

I don`t know, I loved this movie as a kid of course I was the only one of my friends that actually liked it.

This movie rocked my world as a kid.

However, I must say Kyle MacLachlan and David Lynch made an amazing pair for the series "Twin Peaks".

Having read the book first there was no way i could have enjoyed this movie, its a bastardized version of the story. I don`t know why Patrick Stewart signed on to this.

Even with all it`s flaws, Dune is the best Sci Fi movie ever made.
Despite the deviations from the story and spirit of the story, the atmosphere, visuals and music are pitch perfect renditions of the Dune universe.
Not only that but a story set ten thousand years in the future and spanning space but with no aliens. That disciplined story telling.

I`ve only ever played the game on pc. The game was pretty cool for it`s day. I might go hire the movie this weekend...
