Yom Kippur War (4/4)

Part Four. October 1973. "A coalition of Arab states led by Egypt and Syria launched a surprise joint attack on Israel during the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur. Egypt and Syria crossed the cease-fire lines in the Sinai and Golan Heights, respectively, which had been captured by Israel in 1967 during the Six-Day War."

^ Here are some additional information to this documentary which is a little bit biased I have to say. I don`t blame them though, in a time of war, every side glorifies their achievements.

The hole between the 2nd and 3rd Egyptian army was found thanks to the USA satellite and spy airplanes. Without that, this would have been a complete triumph to the Egyptian army.

The documentary does not mention the vast difference in man power between the Egyptian army and the Israeli army. Remember, Egypt has at least ten times the population of Israel. So, even with the breakthrough to the east bank, the number of tanks/soldiers is limited compared to the 2nd Egyptian army.

Resources were a problem for both armies. But as the documentary mentions, USA interferes again with a speedy line of support to the Israeli army in both equipments and food supplies. Yet again, without this help, the Egyptian would have claimed this war easily.

Finally, I don`t see any mention of the deadlock position. It mentions the passage and surrounding of the the 2nd Egyptian army as a turn around and a complete victory to Israel (?). The third army was still free to move. By retreating to the east bank, Egypt would have annihilated the Israeli forces on the east bank. Alternately, the first Egyptian army, the last defense of Egypt which resides in the capital, could have advanced to the canal surrounding the Israel forces. But with the way things have been going, the USA would probably interfere to prevent such massacre. This would put Egypt at a huge disadvantage since the 1st army is the last resort. And thus the deadlock was a better situation, although it puts the 2nd army in a bad position.

To sum up, both sides won something. Egypt achieved a military victory over an army which thought it`s the supreme power in Middle East and all arabs are sheep. They got Sinai back to the last inch. Israel got recognition from Egypt, which is may be the most important country in the middle east "politically speaking". Also, a peace treaty that guarantees no furhter interference from Egypt is a huge gain to Israel. All Israel needed at that time, was more time to grow, expand and increase their military power. That`s why if another war breaks between Egypt and Israel right now, the results would definitely be in Israel favor.
