I`d strongly suggest to take 5 min and read the first act synopsis before watching the video... Or you`ll probably be lost in the story unless you speak dutch.

Even if you speak Dutch you`ll still be lost since this is in German. And kudos to Mozart for writing it in German.

During his time this was quite a bold risk to take since German wasn`t considered as enlightened a language as Italian or French. Mozart showed that it wasn`t language that determined the quality of an artistic piece.

Ironically, though Mozart ignored the opinion of the elite to make something that can be enjoyed by the people, the message of the play itself is that enlightened despotism is good. If this were the actual system of government in place, Mozart might not have been able to write the opera in German in the first place.
