He must have reversed engineered it. awesome.

not bad it is a scanner 3d- with software that applies the data to projection. Cool so basically the software is what is really is the powerful tool.:)

^^ M$ as you refer to them (whom I simply call Microsoft because I`m not a hater of a very successful company on the premise that they are, oh what, successful?) is not only charging for the hardware, but the software that goes a long with the multitouch. Oh and by the way, this isn`t true multitouch-multisensory... Just by the way... Multisensory and touch support a vast array of technologies aside from simple `point and click` mouse simulation.

The intermediary software just uses the webcams videofeed and interprets it using an image tracking algorithm to follow the darkspot (finger contact) on the paper, and then converts it to mouse x,y coordinates.

Hack, but never-the-less neat.

The benefit of going proprietary (ie `M$` and Apple for you idiots who don`t know what proprietary is) is you gain a certain level of quality, depth, product support, and sustainability. Something Linux/Unix/FreeWare doesn`t have that great a track record with. Oh and for the Linux fans just waiting to jump at me; if you`ve spent as much time as I have with OS code you`d have a great deal more respect for MS and Apple.

What does this have to do with the video? Well simply put, MS and Apple may sell their multisensory/touch products for a hefty amount, but I guarantee you it will blow this hack out of the water as far as quality goes.

I think I will try this out, but the box is cheap looking. I think I might go for something else perhaps.

^ @ Pyklo, "...if you`ve spent as much time as I have with OS code..."

Sadly, with MS products, that`s not an option, so if you have some inside track on this secret that 99.9% of the world is strictly forbidden from, then kindly share the source or STFU. And BTW, although I can`t see the source, I have ever dwindling respect for MS because I have to live with their OS`s, and that experience is enough to know with confidence that the source must be a mess. Written by committe in fact.

AFAIC any quality advantage by MS or Apple is ONLY because of their dominant market rights and position, NEVER actually because of true technical quality or design superiority. Being a big enough bully to win the rights battles and hold top place in the markets, does not a true genius or visionary make. We live with the best that these market leaders will allow us to have, not the best things that are possible. Indeed it is most often their propriety that bars the free way forwards, and seldom any lacking in our independant ability to progress.

If MS actually exposed a thourough set of hooks that would allow the base OS and core apps to be THOUROUGHLY controlled and utilized by third parties, then not only would MS lose their monopoly on sevices like multi-touch that require deeper UI interactions, but we consumers would all benefiet greatly by the increased competition and resulting innovations. To the extent that these things are possible to do under Windows by third parties, the difficulty level and cost of development is artificially high, enough to effieciently bar most of the potential competition. Sadly, the only OS choices that are open enough to efficiently allow truly deep integration, and could thus practically host such innovation, are not in line with the huge and binding investments we all have in Windows software and knowledge.

IMO, MS is single handedly responsible for setting the entire industry back by a solid 10 years, because its only real strengths lie in marketing, sales, and the brutality and criminality required to use those tools to build and hold a solid monopoly. Their entire attitude is based around the principal that if they don`t own it, they will try to stop us from doing it, by any means they can get away with. It`s lucky we have laws on our side. MS is not the entire computing universe, they don`t have all the ideas, or all the expertice: the sum total of IT does not flow through them. And that`s a very good thing. Google and Java both being fine examples.

One point central to the core of my thinking is OS as service, vs. OS as application. MS pushes OS as application, and pushes applications merged with OS. And they want absolute domination and control of both OS and applications. This is as wise as trusting the perscriptions of a doctor (application) who invests heavily in his own pharmacutical companies (service). We consumers consitantly lose because of the resulting loss of objectivity and seperation of interests.

BTW, I am 100% WinXP guy, who might get time to play `nix some day, but no time soon. Linux comes highly recommended by lots of smartypantses, but I have a dumb job that lives on NT, and WINE can`t help me yet.

Cheers.
