World's Oldest Salad Dressing

The world's oldest salad dressing (herb infused olive oil) has been found inside a 2,400-year-old shipwreck off the coast of Greece. Also found was a container that may contain the world's oldest wine.

Olive oil infused with fragrant herbs has been identified in an ancient Greek ceramic transport jar known as an amphora, along with another container of what could be the world's oldest retsina-type wine, according to a recent Journal of Archaeological Science paper.

It is the first time DNA has been extracted from shipwrecked artifacts -- the two large jars were recovered from a 2,400-year-old wrecked vessel off the Greek island of Chios. If the second jar indeed contained a retsina-like wine, which is preserved and flavored with a tree resin known as mastic, then the find would push back the known origins of mastic cultivation by 200 years.

"This (study) opens new possibilities for archaeologists -- now perhaps we can figure out what was carried in almost every 'empty' jar we find in land excavations or shipwrecks," researcher Brendan Foley of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution told Discovery News.

I don`t think there was salad dressing still in it (it would have evaporated), but they used dna testing or something to figure out it used to be in there.

A few years ago when raiding the cupboards in my house (most likely for stray booze) i came across a bottle of pepsi that was older than me, complete with old school packaging. I decided to keep it seeing as its pretty much one of
the family and possibly had sentient life inside it...

Best story ever? Of course it was!

The Greek history never ceases to amaze me, especially when you see it popping up in modern times.
It`s really heartbreaking to see them as a third world country now.

I still haven`t found someone who can tell me any more original civilizations that still exist today:
Greeks
Chinese
Egyptians

Not counting all the native indian peoples that still exist in various countries.

^ What you`re asking seems a little strange to me... As the `original` civilizations of the Greeks, Chinese and Egyptians died out a long time ago. The Greek, Chinese and Egyptian peoples still inhabit their respective homelands however. Is that what you`re asking?

I know I need to do a bit of research, because I`m curious if the Greek`s land was actually considered conquered when the Romans took it over, or if they still allowed it to be considered, "Greece", just forced them to pay tribute to the Roman empire.

Because I would think what I mean is peoples who still inhabit their respective homelands, and that were never fully conquered and wiped out for a time.
