OK, there are way, waaay too many people out there doing jobs they have no business doing, putting the world (us!) in jeopardy because they need to pay the rent.

I actually think that, in the end, it would actually be cheaper and safer to subsidise the folks` life, give `em a cheque, an apartment, and maybe some little volunteer jobs - like picking up trash or reading to little kids and old people - to keep them out of trouble and from hurting themselves or others.

There`s a sociologist named Eric Olin Wright who`s done research on the potential for a "Universal Basic Income" that would work in this way.

edit for Mages below: Of course. *All* societies are "socialist" to some degree. Those roads you drive on, paid for through taxes: socialism. That public edcation the developed world relies on: socialism. Military: socialist. The question is not whether or not to have socialism; it`s how much, and where do you want it?

I don`t want people who are a threat to themselves and others in a position where they are responsible for me. I don`t want someone who is border-line retarded or insane tasked with making my food if they don`t have the common sense to wash the tomatoes they put in my salad. I don`t want this woman driving for a living.

Leave laissez-faire capitalism for those of us who can handle it. Let us buy and sell whatever we want as long as it`s all consensual and as long as we`re not hurting anyone. Levy a fair tax, and use the money to keep the sick, the old, the needy, and incompetents in safety and comfort so they aren`t vulnerable and don`t make anyone else vulnerable.
