Trial Stopped Over Sudoku-playing Jurors

Article Submitted by master911.

A MILLION dollar Sydney drugs trial has been aborted after it was found jurors were playing the puzzle game sudoku while evidence was being given.

Sydney District Court Judge Peter Zahra today aborted the trial of two men facing a possible life sentence on drugs conspiracy charges.

He discharged the jury in the trial which had been running for 66 days over the past four months and had cost taxpayers an estimated $1 million.

The jury foreperson admitted to the judge that four to five jurors were playing puzzle games for up to half the time the trial had been going.

"Yes, it helps me keep my mind busy paying more attention. Some of the evidence is rather drawn out and I find it difficult to maintain my attention the whole time and that doesn't distract me too much from proceedings," the jury foreperson said after being questioned by the judge today.

Robyn Hakelis, a lawyer for one of the defendants, alerted the judge to the puzzle playing. She said everyone was upset another trial would have to be held.

"I think it's disappointing more than anything that in a trial the evidence would not have been listened to and jurors are sort of the judges of the facts and it's very disappointing they weren't giving our clients a fair trial," Ms Hakelis said.

The judge was alerted after it was observed the jurors were writing vertically, rather than horizontally. It had been assumed they were taking notes.

Ms Hakelis said both defendants noticed the jurors playing sudoku while they each gave evidence. "We were informed early on Monday of last week that that's what was happening in the jury box and then subsequent to that I made observation, sort of took note to watch what was happening," she said.

"I noticed they were writing in all different directions and straight away I thought `they're not taking notes like we thought they were'.

"Everyone assumed they were taking notes."

Jurors in the trial are anonymous and no action can be taken against them for the puzzle playing.

A new trial is expected to begin in a few weeks after a new jury is empanelled.

sudoku niiinnnjaaaaaaaa!!! guess they weren`t sneaky enough. i don`t get why trials cost so much money anyway. well, i guess if it was 1/6 of the year, and u had like a judge and a few lawyers with 6 digit salaries, and like a dozen security ppl and a dozen office/maintenance workers dedicated to that courtroom, it might cost a million dollars. man, if i had to listen about the same story for 66 days i`d stop paying attention too. trials take too long

have you ever watched A&E?

none of the jurors EVER seem to interested in whats going on in the trial

thats why the system sort of sucks, cuz if somebody is up for murder do you really want to take the chance of having a murderer living among you in society

plus id just vote the fucker guilty on account of him making me be there

Remember, these people represent a jury of your peers.

Scary, eh?

In America can`t a juror fall asleep and they can`t do anything about it?

Stupid thing is, it`s got to be the defense (lawyers) that are really the ones demanding a new trial. As if they didn`t already make enough money. I guess if you are guilty and going to jail for decades +, there`s nothing left to lose.

I agree with the jurors on that one though. I do solitare or bubble shooter while listening / watching documentaries, or while talking on the phone. It`s the game that suffers, not my attention. If I was 66 days at trial, I`d be doing about the same thing, for the same reason, and it would definitely improve my overall retention and uptake. No other way not to fall asleep through that kind of crap. Heck, I would rather read SF, but that honestly wouldn`t work.

How about the judges stop giving so much bullshits to waste time and make more money on their clients, and talk about real issues?
