hteen is right. His whole routine is just ripped off from past, better comedians. My favorite clip of Dennis Leary was the one posted where Greg Giraldo rips him a new asshole on Tough Crowd. Lunearetic thought it was funny maybe because he hasn`t heard that EXACT SAME BIT from funnier comedians, only instead it was about warning labels, and most of the time it`s not done with the added shock value of singling kids out specifically.

hteen forgot to add shitty delivery and no sense of timing, probably b/c it doesn`t rhyme. Ever seen Bob Saget`s horrible standup? That`s what Leary reminds me of when he stutters a bit, losing his place momentarily in the lines he spends so much effort memorizing. Leary reverts to inserting "fuck" every other word b/c he has no improvisational ability whatsoever.

This whole friggin joke can be summed up with, "I like it when some kids get hurt, and I won`t apologize for saying so because I`M Denis Leary, and I don`t care what anyone thinks." But the "fearless" and "edgy" Leary had to add that bit about "I don`t hate stupid kids, I hate the stupid grownups they grow up to be." What made-for-TV drivel. Denis Leary IS the skit.

Bill Hicks had a similar joke about the kid on the airplane poking him in the head incessantly and then fucking with the emergency escape. Bill managed to get a few spot-on caricatures, emoting onstage in a way that had people laughing at his delivery. He didn`t just stand there reciting a list of complaints as fast as he could, stinking of fear, desperately avoiding any interaction with his audience which might distract him from remembering his lines exactly as they were written before the show.

And you know what? Bill Hicks wouldn`t have to make nice w/ the audience by saying "I don`t hate stupid kids," because the audience KNEW he was joking. He had the balls to connect with them like a good comedian (or any performer) should.

Leary just speeds through his lines hoping that nobody gets time to notice how repetitive the themes to his "jokes" or how insecure he is that he can`t stop to size up his audience`s reactions to his jokes and adapt accordingly. A good comedian can think on his feet, it`s why Colbert is such a good entertainer.

That clip with Greg Giraldo running circles around Leary shows how unable Leary is to do just that. For all his edgy irreverence, I`m pretty sure the guy can`t come up with an incisive, funny comeback to save his life. If you compare Hicks` interviews and Leary`s (the unscripted ones), it`s so obvious who is the comedian and who is the hack. Nobody lets it go b/c it`s a constant reminder how unaware people are of talent and creative courage (just look at all the worthless albums and movies that make money), and how easy it is to profit off that flaccid, absent-minded consumption.

I apologize for my opinions. I apologize for liking Bill Hicks so much that I defend his mark on this world. I apologize for having these strong feelings about pop culture`s icons, their financial rewards, and what those rewards say about their consumers. I apologize for thinking these thoughts that you don`t like. I really wish I could just laugh along and not think. I`m sorry for not admiring Denis Leary.

But most of all, I`m sorry that Denis Leary is a slack-jawed pantywaste who would still be unknown if he hadn`t stolen his entire act from one of his own personal friends.
