i`m not an expert, but for those who are wondering or are interested

the reason why there were so many young boys in the seacrafts was because they were small enough to fit many at a time into the cannon firing sections of the ship

by making the spaces narrower, u could fit more rows of cannons onto a single vessel, making it more powerful during broadsides

broadsides are the common (and probably the only effective) battle strategy at this time, where two ships will maneuver and come side-by-side with each other, at which point they will fire all the cannons on that side of the ship, firing one after the other, row after row. by firing one after the other instead of all at the same time, u have that automatic firing effect (after the first cannon reloads, the last gun fires, and so on)

it was really hard to tell who was firing and who was who, you can barely identify people`s faces before it switched camera. plus everyone was wearing different clothes. i guess the point was the underscore the chaos of battle at the time, but eh, to me it was a blur of thrashing around of arms and smoke. i didn`t see the movie, but was the reason they didn`t sink the ship first was to free those ppl inside?

ps, don`t forget to turn down your volume when you move onto the next clip!

^I think you you might be having trouble identify who is who because you don`t know the characters and you`re watching it on a 2"x3" display.

Trust me, this movie has some of the finest sea battles ever filmed.

Great battle scene, but I agree with Gimli000, seems they couldn`t afford proper uniform, so basically everyone fighting against everyone in gray clothing! Cheapest trick to save money :-)

its just because the people working on the boat, the sailors, didnt actually wear uniform back then. Although the marines (the guys in red) did because they were actually part of the army. Sailors on the other hand were more casual as they wernt actually locked into service. So i guess they were trying to be autherntic. It was really annoying trying to tell who was who tho lol.
Also the guy who was talking about broadsides before... The main reason they didnt fire all the cannon at once was because it would litearally smash their own ship to peices.

They didn`t sink the ship because it is surprisingly difficult to sink a ship with those canons. They are pointed at the mass of the ship for a higher chance of a hit, than to sink it towards the bottom. The battles at the time were very brutal and drawn out.

I saw this movie. This was actually their third time fighting this very ship. The first time, they tried to sink it immediately. The cannonballs just bounced off it. The french ship came from behind the english ship, fired a few shots until it hit the rudder, and then left. Afterwards, one of the crew members showed the captain a model of the french boat, and showed that it had a thick layer of wood around on its sides, making the cannonballs unable to penetrate fully and make a hole. That`s why they had to board the ship to take it out.
