To be honest, I`ve never really found Dennis Leary to be that funny, while Greg Giraldo is always good for a laugh. He always does well at the roasts.

I used to love Dennis Leary, then I discovered Bill Hicks and found out that Dennis stole not only most of his good material from Hicks, but stole almost his entire comic persona from Hicks. Respect to the guy for owning Leary.

RIP Bill Hicks(Another Dead Hero)

Yeah Leary sucks, he`s like Hicks Lite, good to see him being owned by a joke that was obviously not written beforehand.

^Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn I loved it too and I thought that Root of all Evil was going to be something similar but it is just a sad sad scripted waste of anyones talent besides Patton Oswalt, one of my favorite comedians and just an overall great dramatic performer.

Gregg Giraldo is hilarious. Dennis Leary is a bad comedian, bad actor, and a pretty shitty person in general. He`s some "big-shot" who has to take up crap with some working comedian over nothing. As was already mentioned in a previous post, Leary steals material. ANY comedian who steals one joke and passes it off as their own doesn`t deserve the boot imprint on their ass as they get kicked out of show-business.

But these are just my own laments that we live in an unfair world, where idiots like Leary, Cook and Mencia are rewarded for blatant theft.

^That`s a little overkill, you won`t find many comedians who use -only- their own material. Even comedians known for their own material, still use a few jokes they`ve heard here and there. That`s the nature of comedy, jokes get passed on and around, changed only insomuch as the nature of the joke teller changes (if you think differently of a comic, chances are he/she still has `stolen` jokes, but that you simply haven`t heard them before. Which is, of course, the point of retelling them). The difference is taking the occasional line that fits naturally into your own comedy (perfectly legit), especially with permission from the original comic if he or she is known, versus building a career completely out of other people`s material (not at all legit).

That said, the brand of a good comic is either coming up with a proper retort (such as Giraldo did, and Leary completely failed at), or playing it off that any retort you can`t top is funny. If you get topped, you respect that, laugh, and give props to the guy who did it, you don`t get pissy and throw out lame, unfunny attempts to discredit the other guy. This wouldn`t have ever been posted to Spiked (or anywhere else) if Leary had responded with a laugh, and a dismissive "Fair enough, you got me".

Max Power: Dennis Leary is bad comedian, bad actor, and a pretty shitty person in general.

From Wikipedia:

On December 3, 1999, six firefighters from Leary`s hometown of Worcester were killed in a massive warehouse fire. Among the dead were Leary`s cousin, Jerry Lucey, and his close childhood friend, Lt. Tommy Spencer.[3] In response, the comedian founded the Leary Firefighters Foundation. Since its creation in the year 2000, the foundation has distributed over $2.5 million (USD) to fire departments in the Worcester, Boston, and New York City areas for equipment, training materials, new vehicles, and new facilities. Leary won $125,000 for the foundation on the game show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. Leary has close ties with 107.3 WAAF-FM, who in 2000 released the station album "Survive This!" Part of the proceeds from this album were donated to the Leary Firefighters Foundation.

A separate fund run by Leary`s foundation, the Fund for New York`s Bravest, has distributed over $2 million (USD) to the families of the 343 firemen killed in the September 11, 2001 attacks, as well as providing funding for necessities such as a new mobile command center, first responder training, and a high-rise simulator for the FDNY`s training campus. This new fund was established because the families of the Worcester fire did not want to include New York families into the fund, as a result Leary created a separate fund for New York.

As the foundation`s president, Leary has been active in all of the fundraising, usually presenting large checks and donated equipment personally. The close relationship he has developed with the FDNY, as well as individual firefighters across the New York/New England area, has resulted in Leary`s most recent television show, Rescue Me, a Comedy-drama on FX. In the pilot episode of the show, he is seen wearing a Leary Firefighter Foundation 9-11 Memorial T-Shirt.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans Leary donated over a dozen boats to the New Orleans fire department to aid in rescue efforts in future disasters, the foundation also rebuilt entire NOLA firehouses.

SEEMS TO ME HE`S A PRETTY GOOD PERSON, DOES GIRALDO DO SOMETHING SIMILAR OTHER THEN MAKING PEOPLE LAUGH? I BET YOU NOT!!!

^So setting up a charity organization allows you to be a bad comedian, bad actor and a dick?

Yeah well, charity dollars should be intelligently weighed by the amount of sacrifice (in dollars if that`s your moral metric of choice). If an $18k/yr Wal-Mart worker donates $500 to a charity, and typical hedge fund manager raking in $60 Mil that year donates $500,000 to a charity, the Wal-Mart worker has sacrificed MUCH more than the white collar criminal.

It`s a simple question of how much do you give back vs. how much do you take out. $500 is 2.7% of the Wal-Mart worker`s annual pay, $500k is just 0.8% of the hedge fund manager`s. Sure, it sounds like a lot and you can do much more with it, but it represents less sacrifice in pure earning power.

To take it a step further, the $500 hurts (quite literally if a medical emergency arises in the Wal-Mart worker`s family) a great deal MORE at that income level because your basic needs cannot be met. So, even if the hedge fund manager tries to out-charity the Wal-Mart worker, donating 5% of his yearly income at $3 million, it STILL does not hurt as much as that measly $500, because all the basic needs of his immediate and extended family (and their extended families) can easily be met with the remaining fortune. There is only so much a human being can consume in a given year. This is why a flat tax hurts the poor so much more than it hurts the filthy rich. Same with sales taxes, or any "tax on consumption," as economists like to phrase it.

I wonder how much Leary has raked in stealing a dead man`s comedy routine? Kudos for Giraldo referencing this thievery in his "if you tried comedy writing," comment. 5/5 for crushing Leary`s flaccid, emotional hawkishness with a little bit o history.
