The Blackburn Buccaneer

The Blackburn Buccaneer was designed as a long-range carrier-based attack aircraft. It entered RAF service in July 1962, and retired in 1992, during which time it remained one of the fastest low-level aircraft. The Buccanner featured many novel and inovative design features; a variable incidence tail-plane, area ruled fuselage, rotating internal bomb-bay and wing boundary-Layer control. In addition to conventional ordnance, in 1965 the Buccaneer was type-approved for nuclear weapons delivery i.e. the Red Beard and WE177 bombs. All nuclear weapons were carried internally.

Weird looking plane, from the front those large engine air inlets make the plane look as if it would have puffy cheeks.

What are those mad looking flaps at the back all about? Are they for increased drag or some other purpose?
Nice tune. What was it?

^^^ its a `clamshell` air brake, you guessed it, for increased drag therefore slowing down on approach.

Also seen on a few commercial `Short Take-Off and Landing` (STOL) types: http://farm1.static.flickr.com/103/280496746_3cb3734274_o.jpg

Handled low level flight much better than anything at the time - F16, Tornado, F15. Body was designed for this and this alone. They had to call in Buccaneers to assist Tornados in the gulf war apparently.
