Good stuff. Kinda puts all current policical and economic problems in perspective as petty playground squabbles.
Of course this is assuming we haven`t destroyed ourselves before colonising space.

^^ ballbag. As the sun heats and the zone which we can inhabit moves backwards, mars will become warmer untill the zone is positioned over mars. Of course eventually Mars will become too hot too but hopefully we`ll have already have left for somewhere else.

The sun has 500 million years to go. We might not even recognize ourselves by then. And even if we didn`t change at all as a species, is it really feasible that 6 billion people can live on Earth for a few hundred MILLION years, let alone a few hundred or thousand, without using up everything worth sticking around here for anyway? It`s fine to put money away for retirement, but you still have to pay the bills that are due now.

There`s still a part of me that wants to believe that we`ll eventually find a way to do interstellar travel and colonize other worlds - or even cooler - tweak our genes to survive on worlds vastly different.

Never say never - a hundred years ago if you told anyone we`d be on the moon in 61 years, you`d be committed to an institution.

Keep the hope alive!

How cool it`d be if we could get to see the start of space colonization in our lifetime?
Of course, first the human race would have to solve a lot of issues that prevent it from improving and evolving.

Before the time where our planet becomes uninhabitable, we would already have nuked everything in the planet to extinction ... most likely.

I think it`s funny when people try to predict new sciences, which we`ve seen can completely change the way we see things. I think in the next fifty years alone we`re going to make so many advances we won`t even use half of the things we do now.

talking about 500 million years later.... humans are either dead or are not going care in the slightest about some measly little star.

this was a great series! I really enjoyed the CG.

I think this series is kind of useless or for people without a grasp of simple logic. It`s like they`re talking to me about something they have just started studying themselves.

I don`t totally agree with this documentary when Sam Neil discusses that the earth will be left behind in terms of the `safe zone`

If you actually do some research on the sun, you`ll know that the Sun is actually 33% larger now than it was when it was very young in it`s life cycle.

However, as the sun ages, it becomes larger and hotter and the MASS of the sun actually DECREASES. And, as most of us know, the less mass that an object has in space, the less of a force it will have in terms of gravity.

So, in the coming millions of years, as the sun becomes larger and hotter, the safe zone DOES move out. BUT, because the sun loses mass, the earth`s orbit will actually move out with the safe zone... prolonging life.

I don`t think the earth will burn up at all. The sun will eventually exhaust all of its energy and just die out. Then, the earth will freeze over :)

I hope people realize it doesn`t mind how "safe" the climate on Mars is, you can never have life like we know it, un-contained. The core is not creating a sufficient Electro Magnetic and therefore radiation from space will bombard it no matter what and all life we plant there will die. So have fun with that shit, I`ll stay on earth and hopefully enough oil companies leave so I can breathe air and not smog.
Oh and I absolutely love the insane time scales they throw out there and how "imminent" the threat is. For fuck sakes 400 years 1000 years ago we had philosophers aplenty but 300 years after that we were in the dark ages shitting in little holes we dug outside out huts. now 700 years after that we can send probes and people into space, talk to anyone at the press of a button, have access to more knowledge than we can fathom, and we choose to use this technology to fuck up our planet and kill each other. In 1000 years we have devolved and re-evolved as a species so much there is no way we can predict what we will do in 100 years never mind 500 Million years from now.
