It takes 42 minutes, except for the friction. Unless you make that tunnel a perfect vaccuum (also a partial solution to the heat issue), you have air friction. If the tunnel is not striaght down, then you would need some kind of wheels or suspension, or you will be scraping the sides. Again, friction.

Then you might want to put huge fans on either end, use the air current to blow you along, and use the heated air for free power. You would need two tunnels then, because they would be one way. You just better have good insulation to pass through it, since we`re talking hot like blast furnace. I think you would need some cooldown time too.

We need some kind of super materials that don`t melt. Problem is that when shit gets so hot that everything melts, EVERYTHING melts. DAMN.

Bullshit, you wont turn up at the end of the tunnel, its called terminal veliocity. At probibly 1/8th of the journey into it, you would reach the fastest speed you can possible fall at, when you hit the halfway mark, you will only go as `high` as the speed you are going at allows you to like 1/8 of the way

@evil pasta - it`s a thought experiment designed to illustate forces of physics, not to serve as a blueprint for an actual form of travel. The heat from the centre of the earth would probably fry the occupants of a traveller let alone the radiation. Plus you`d have a lot of trouble with the force of air creating suction at one end and a blow tube at the other.
