1950s Voice: "Golly! What a swell house!"

Seriously though, I think we reached the pinnacle of human optimism in the 50s. Even with the shadow of nuclear annihilation hanging over most of us, we could still look to the future and be excited about something as trivial as an electric razor or hands-free telephones.

Compared to the present, just yesterday I was reading about the Phoenix landing on Mars, and all the nay-sayers whining and complaining along the lines of "Why are we spending billions of dollars going to Mars when we have people starving here on Earth?" Jesus Christ, get over yourself hippy.

^ Although for a bit of another perspective, you should read Stephanie Coontz`s `The Way We Never Were`, that details the many ways in which 1950s America, despite the gleam and optimism, were actually a dismal time as well. Remember that violent racism and segregation were the norm, the Red Scare was in full swing with all its oppression, teen pregnancy and abortion rates were actually much higher than just about any time since (contrary to popular belief and despite the illegality of abortion) etc. etc. etc. That "greatest generation" the sycophants are always praising came back from "fighting a war for freedom" in Europe, and then fought against racial equality, gender equality, and countless other freedoms at home in the US.

If you were White, Christian, middle-class and up, things really were "swell". Otherwise you had to wait years, maybe decades for your "American Dream". Some are still waiting...

^^ Gotta check out that book Klavlav, cheers for the recommendation.

But ... then again ..

... teen pregnancy/abortion rates? No offence, but bad example .. I`m sure the middle ages / Rennaisance kept *real* accurate records of that, what with militant Christianity n` all. How many Puritans recorded their latest abortion *ahem* miscarriage/still birth *ahem* eh? You`re taking a statistic we knew nothing about beforehand and proclaiming it as gospel.

Shit .. in the 50s, oil was cheap and flowing, the economy was booming, and the Reds (although a threat) didn`t actually stick planes into downtown NY.

Compare that to today - we have record oil prices, an economy in recession, racial segregation (as always - and that shit has been a problem for 2,000 years odd at least), *and* planes into downtown NY.

Yep, everything is goddamn peachy.

Welcome to 2008, the Year When Shit Smelt Like Flowers.

EDIT: Sorry, this sounds pretty harsh but I had a few beers this evening and feel like venting my fears for humanity in a seemingly random manner, such as this. You made good enough points, but I just couldn`t help myself.

Blame the beer ...

.. by the way, what were the alcoholism rates like in the 50s? Remember in the 1550s the average Briton would drink 7-8 pints of beer a day from weaning (the water gave you a lethal case of diarrhea).

Maybe my point is this: worth considering where we came from, to figure out where we are. Life doesn`t start at college - there`s a helluva lotta things that happen before that.

EDIT EDIT: Damnit .. can`t help it ... gotta go attack someone else randomly. Sorry man .. good points .. I`ll check out the book. Gotta go all diatribe on someone. Ciao! (ps - everyone can vote me down next time you see me! bye!)

^ Point taken, and no hard feelings. I think Coontz would largely agree with you. The idea that there`s some mythical "Golden Age" in the past that we all wax poetic about is exactly what she`s criticising.

Linguist Steven Pinker, in one of his TED lectures, goes so far as to say that the era we`re living in now is far better than just about any point in the past. He insists our doomsday fears are irrational, the result of increased *attention* on the world`s problems, not the existence of more problems.

I don`t know if I`d go that far, but I definitely agree that 50s America were not the walk in the park many Americans remember it as (especially if you were black and that walk in the park got you lynched, or Gay and that walk in the park got you arrested for cruising...etc etc.).

Ha .. yeah, great point on you last paragraph there. I must admit I was presuming to be a white fella in the 50s.

Gotta find these books you`re suggesting. And yeah, the TED talks are just about the best thing on the internet. Will have to check out Mr Pinker as well (although, surely, even as a linguist, he must hate his surname).

Yours Sincerely, Uzo. See ya round - let us spar another time! Have at thee! (et cetera)
