This isn`t Death Metal, if fact Reroute to Remain was the album they completely lost their Gothenburg sound and started sounding like a mainstream alternative rock band :/.

and yes I agree that it is not "Death metal" by american standards but just as we classify the horrible shit on the radio as "metal" or "rock" or "this and that". We can honestly not say anything besides that they are a great band.

I`m sure if we talked to them they wouldn`t classify their sound as "Death Metal". But thats what they`ve been forced to sell out to.

Whatever their contract says and whatever their label wants is whatever they say they are.

Real metal is about playing what you feel, expressing hatred, sadness, anger or whatever it may be in a way that the BAND feels to be the right way, not the label.

Look up their shit? Are you kidding me, you obviously dont know a thing about metal, i have over 1500 metal albums, im not just talking mainstream shit like this that you can buy at a fucking HMV, real metal, no 70s shit, demo tapes that only had 666 copies released.... I am not using "american" standards because i am not American. They are not nor were they ever a death metal band. From Lunar Strain in 94 to Clayman in 04 they were rocking as part of the big 3 Gothenburg bands; At The Gates and Arch Enemy. Gothenburg metal is very much alike to Melodic Death but it is not what the sound they produce today. This is NOT a good sound to start with if you THINK you like "death metal" or In Flames for that matter, this is not what In Flames sounded like in their early days and you are just plain fucking ignorant arguing with that.
Dont try and pull some "typical american " bullshit because I listen to more metal in a year than you will in your whole life.
I hope youre american and not swedish because if you are, you`d be a fucking disgrace to your contry and culture.

I just watched them live at gigantour here in san diego. They played with children of bodom, cowboy for hire and megadeth. fucking awsome show. truly epic.

Yeah Sweden here. In Flames used to be a fun band to listen to. They did some fun things and bent the rules a bit, I mean come on what kind of death metal band uses synthesizers? But whether it`s death metal or not is really not the point, as long as it makes you want to play air instruments it`s probably metal in some degree.

However...

...in the recent year they have just completely gone with the main stream and just started doing the "emo", it`s just loneliness, hopelessness and angst these days.

Sure if you really think about it it`s probably due to fact that we are getting more and more depressed as a culture. I mean there are hardly anything to celebrate anymore. The world is going to end within the next 100 year because everything we do contribute to global warming, crime is on the rise and only idiots are in power. That`s not of course the real picture, it is however the view of most of the people. An "emo" culture leads to "emo" music, In Flames is just one of bands which went from a cheerful angry style to downright sad and depressing angry. If you look at the type of fans here in Sweden, hardly any real metalheads are into In Flames anymore, it`s basically just teenage emos that are "misunderstood" and "suicidal" and of course a bunch of "normal" people that listens to In Flames because they have won some Grammis` and are simply to stupid to think for themselves.

I hate In Flames because right now they aren`t even trying to be original anymore and I think that`s something any band should try to be, don`t really care if it`s metal, reggae, pop, techno or punk. If you just do the same crap as everyone else and just ride on you past glory you aren`t doing anything good.

*Just to clarify, it`s the stereotypical MySpace-emo-sad-MCR I am talking about, not the real emocore scene.

tldr; Stop being emo, it`s fucking stupid and boring as hell. Some people like to think about what the music stands for, not just go "Oh it`s about cutting yourself and being raped by your dad."
