There`s one easy reason that korea and china... probably among others.... have much... MUCH faster internet connections than we have in the US. the US only looks towards what`s beneficial today and invests in it. If something won`t provide anything for us in due time, our government doesn`t give a sh*t. Over there.... they look towards the future. If something might cost a lot of money now, but pay off several years from now... they invest in it. That`s why they have internet speeds in excess of 100Mbit, while most connections in the US barely pass 20Mbit IIRC. Think most of their internet connections are provided via fiber-optic too.

^^ A lot of that has to do with the fact that Korea is a social-democracy and not a free market-democracy as the US is. Internet and technology is more strictly regulated (in the business sense) in Korea than it is in the US. The Korean government has gone through great reaches to be considered one of the most technologically advanced countries in the world. The government even funds video game publishers to create free MMO games for the use of every Korean with a SSN.
