Surely this must have happened with a fat animal whilst the plane was still on the ground... i mean aerodynamics surely would have avoided this in the air at cruise speed...

bluflame, unfortunately aeordynamics mean that air goes around the plane smoothly, unfortunately birds are not air. :P
But seriously even the air hits the plane dude so if air cannot avoid it, a bird has no chance.
