Battle of Antietam 1862

Opening scenes from the 1989 movie "Glory". The first two minutes are the slow build-up. The events are also known as the "Battle of Sharpsburg (particularly in the South), fought on September 17, 1862, near Sharpsburg, Maryland, and Antietam Creek, as part of the Maryland Campaign. It was the first major battle in the American Civil War to take place on Northern soil. It was the bloodiest single-day battle in American history, with about 23,000 casualties."

i`m assuming because their rifles aren`t very accurate so they have to get real close, looks like they were attacking a defensive position so they were the ones that have to march into the line of fire. did the north win that battle because it looked like the confederates were gone

Stbasdf the North lost the South won that battle also Haldir they didn`t fire until they weren`t close because to reload the rifles it takes about 1-2 minutes for a well trained soldier and the rifles are very inaccurate and before they reload they would be dead.

The battle of Antietam was actually considered a draw; it is to date the highest single number of casualties America has ever taken in a single day, numbering over 30,000.

As to the marching into a hail of bullets, history has shown that the most common mistake made in war is to refight the last war and not fight the one you`re in. The tactic was the common, acceptable version of battle in Europe for most of the preceding century, with common examples being the American Revolution and the Napoleonic wars. But was weapons became far more accurate and deadly than those carried by their grandfather`s, such tactics should have been discarded.

Another example of such foolishness was the massive charges of WWI into a hail of machine gun bullets.

^^^It didn`t take 1-2 minutes to reload their rifles. A trained soldier could reload in 20-30 seconds, which is still a lifetime when you are being shot at.

I think the period firearms are coming into question here. I believe (without checking wikipedia due to laziness) that they were using cartridge loaded RIFLES. This means that not only were they considerably more accurate than the muskets of the revolutionary war, but using cartridges allowed for reloading in, as rabies99 stated, seconds as opposed to minutes. However, as Todd Robinson described, they were still using the tactics of the previous wars which included the line skirmish strategy... Put those two together and you get some bloody shit. As the first battle of this new war, you can guess that the union soldiers marching on the confederates had no freaking idea what they were getting themselves into until most of the guys near them dropped dead on the first volleys.

Ok, gather around kiddies here is a nice history lesson for you all. First, this battle was not on Northern soil, Maryland was occupied by the Union and never seceded during the Civil War but is south of the Mason/Dixon line which delineates the North and the South. Rifles of the era, at least those used by the average soldier were rifled but they did not use cartridges, they were still muzzle loaded with black powder, the shot was however not usually ball shot but rather shaped like today`s bullets to increase accuracy. This was the problem, rifled barrels and aerodynamic shot produced a situation where Napoleonic tactics, which were designed for smooth bore muskets, just lead to whole sale slaughter. BTW this was hardly the first battle of the war, the Civil War started in April 1861, the battle depicted took place in Sept. 1862, the Union had by then engaged in many battles with the South but the advantage, as was shown time and again during the war, lay with the side that was on the defensive not the offensive hence the length of the conflict since the North had to basically bleed the South into submission since neither side could count on decisive offensives to break the enemy.

YOu think walking into a hail of fire is retarted you should see more of the medic scene. Back then a quick and "best"fix was to amputate your limbs.
