TorrentSpy Hit with $110M Judgement - Th...

TorrentSpy already shut its doors earlier this year, and even though the company’s founder Justin Bunnell insisted that it’s trying legal loss was not behind the decision to close down the site, it appeared to be the only feasible reason for TorrentSpy moving towards oblivion. After a defeating battle against the MPAA, TorrentSpy was out of tricks for continuing to fight against the American Hollywood structure.

And if its own decision to shut things down wasn’t enough to do that, then the $110 million judgment against its parent company, Valence Media, may just do the trick, reports Slyck. Being hit with such a hefty sum, even after closing down the site, is a sure fire way to send a message to TorrentSpy–and beyond.

This isn’t the first time the MPAA has beaten a dead horse. A legal suite against DVDr-core seemed to drag on for years longer than it needed to, even though the MPAA has likely dropped this particular lawsuit earlier this month. The MPAA wants to really make sure that there won’t be any ongoing issues with services like TorrentSpy, as an injunction was also ordered against the company.

While Valence Media can retain possession of the site, the company is prohibited from indexing any copyrighted content. To top things off, the MPAA has been awarded statutory damages of $30,000 “per infringement pursuant to 17 U.S.C. § 504(c), for each of the 3,699 infringements shown, for a total judgment in the amount of $110,970,000…” It just doesn’t pay to be a torrent company in the US. Do you think this will encourage others in the industry to give it up?

I am just gonna quote this from Torrentspy site.

"Big Brother in the form of an increasingly powerful government and in an increasingly powerful private sector will pile the records high with reasons why privacy should give way to national security, to law and order [...] and the like." - Justice William O. Douglas

What can we do?

Fuck, $110 million.... What a load of fucking shite....

Why can`t everyone be like Trent Reznor... He release his latest album for free... If all artists did that, there wouldn`t be torrent sites, and no piracy.....

meh... let me know when famous actors/directors etc start grossing an average of less than 100k/year and I`ll stop downloading movies.

^^Trent Reznor is a pioneer (musically, technologically)... i personally don`t care for NiN or most of Reznor`s work, but I definitely have to give him the respect he deserves as a talented artist-- unfortunately, however... He`s a very rich man and can easily afford to put out free music. He doesn`t need any more money. New/Upcoming musicians need the money to pay back their record companies... fuck, I hate the industry..

in happier news.. demonoid`s been back for over a month now, hope it lasts.

we need a new model. artists can`t give their stuff up for free, and shouldn`t be expected to. It`s easy for non-artist types to make ignorant assumptions about what goes in to making a book/painting/song/soundtrack/film etc, and prattle on about how they are somehow `entitled` to the artist`s work. This is ignorance and really needs to be treated as such.

whoever first pulls off the new business model for the arts will make a fortune, cuz the artists want a new method and so do the people who want the art. The only ones defending the old ways are the suits that wanna control which artworks will get made.

ok guys let me tell you...
for producing a decent track with nice sound i need at least 20000$ for the beginning, and i`m talking about electronic music - this is not for LIVE. i know this bcoz music is my hobby... only software costs about 10000+$
if you need to name a few here it is:
waves diamond bundle = 7000$ (oh now it`s 5600 with 20% off this may how great)
cubase sx = 800$
flstudio = 150$
etc etc...
i`m not talking about hardware
normal mid-range active monitors cost just about 5000$

how should I pay for this? i`m writing good music, if you want to check i can give links or even arrange spiked videos, but i can`t find a label to release even the most polished and "forum-successful" tracks... they just don`t want to work with unknown artists, so u have to self-promo, create a promomix and spam music forums worldwide, after that you have some chances of being taken on to a recording company... i`m talking about electronic music, i`m afraid in rock or rnb you`ll have to shit bambies and have greater contacts... oh yeah i forgot to mention - contacts rule the world.

Increased clamp downs on freedom, (such as our choice to distribute what we wish on the internet) are becoming more and more commonplace. Ron Paul is the only candidate who has openly declared his intentions NOT to regulate the internet...maybe if we voted for him we wouldn`t experience things like this.
