Festo AirJelly

AirJelly houses two lithium-ion polymer accumulator batteries rated at 8 V and 400 mA, which can be completely charged in half an hour and are AirJelly's sole source of power. A connected central electric drive unit transmits the force to a bevel gear wheel and then to eight spur gears in sequence. These gears power eight shafts, each of which activates a crank; these in turn move the jellyfish's eight tentacles. Each tentacle is designed as a structure with Fin Ray Effect®- a construction derived from the functional anatomy of a fish's fin. The actual structure consists of two alternating tension and pressure flanks movably connected by ribs. If a flank is subjected to pressure, the geometrical structure automatically bendsin the direction of the applied force. Together, the tentacles produce a peristaltic forward motion similar to that of their biological model.

I`m sorry. It`s a balloon with fins that move. Why is this special? What was it designed for, and why should we care about it? It would have been nice to have a narrator explaining what the hell the thing is supposed to do other than mimick a jellyfish in the air.

Now that`s cool, I want one. The tune was "There is a star" by DJ Einstein, if anyone out there is interested.
Hope this helps?

I read the title (as totentiki imagined), and to answer RexKwonDo:

I don`t know why it`s special, not specifically anyway. It mimics a jellyfish.... :s

I have no idea what the motivation/reason is for designing it (or how much it cost).

I`m not sure why we should care about it. It will be useful for... umm... erm....

totentiki, perhaps you could answer for us m8? Cos I`m lost. And you sound like you know something that I missed from the title.

Sure it looks cool, but why?

It`s obviously an engineering project, things like this are relevant because it`s able to do something like controlled flight using what would appear to be very little power while remaining structurally strong. Compare what this thing does: stable and controlled flight, to something like an unmanned helicopter. We could use something like this to study weather, since it would be susceptible to small winds, probably robust enough to carry other instruments and a transmitter. I have no idea what this is intended for other than being mechanically impressive art, and for that purpose, I think it succeeds. But even if you`re too cynical, it could certainly be adapted to aide more practical endeavors.

knivestv - If you can`t see it you are in good company. The people who invented the first home camera and vcr thought that there was no practical use for what they came up with. So they sold the product to a Japanese company.

Point is, if you can`t see it - you are lacking a certain level of foresight is all.

If nothing else, it`s entertaining to watch. The engineering that was put into this was pretty intense. To fly with that little power is not something to thumb your nose at. We tend to ridicule what we don`t understand.
