I`m still looking for someone to answer me why people hate/fear homosexuality so much, if we ignore religion of course.

anyone knows?

Homosexuality is diametrically opposed to fundamental human nature? Not to mention the argument that it violates even animal instincts. Note that I don`t advocate these beliefs, only the ignorant do.

Lezard:

Sexual repression is one of the first forms of repression in any dictatorial society. Homosexual repression is just one form of this, but it`s no coincidence that every society that oppresses homosexuality also limits heterosexuality as well (like the morality police in Saudi Arabia that punish women to beatings for sitting in cars with unrelated men).

It`s also no coincidence that every society that allows more freedoms for Gays, allows more freedoms for straights, too. And in fact, just as many - if not more - cultures have been tolerant or even encouraging of homosexuality as discouraging of it. Reay Tannahill, in her book about the history of sex, quotes one study that shows well over half of the cultures surveyed around the world were tolerant of various forms of homosexual expression, up to and including forms of same-sex marriage, ancient and modern.

The roots of the oppression? Religion plays a huge role, perhaps the biggest. The monotheistic religions that are the most homophobic all developed in places where (homo)sexuality was part of the religious and spiritual practise of rival religions or rival sects within their own. Demonising (literally) those rival practises was one vital step in demonising the beliefs in question. Horny, horned, queer, sex-god Pan became an archetype for the "Devil". The snake worshiped in countless near-east religions (including early forms of Judaism) became associated with "evil, loose women", etc.

Pleasure in general was/is also demonised in all the monotheistic religions. When pleasure is problematised as a "sin", while pain and suffering can be repackaged and lionised as "martyrdom" or "holy", you achieve a remarkable form of brainwashing and control. You very effectively cause people to fear and hate that which feels good, while making what`s painful attractive or "heroic". Quite elegant, really.

Thousands of years later, and hundreds of years after the "Enlightenment", we are still suffering the consequences, gay and straight alike.

********************

Edit for rybear below: I love it how, at the mere mention of the word `Gay`, phobic, hater, closet-cases like rybear let loose with a stream of conscious, word association of their fears/suppressed desires: "shit-covered-dick-sex-with-dogs-and-horses!!! (grunt gasp)"

I bet he typed that with one hand down his pants.

There is nothing objectively about getting shit on your dick that is any worse than vaginal juices, menstrual blood, spit etc. etc., unless of course you`re one of those brain-washed 30-year-old virgins, or the teenage version in training like rybear.

Look, sex is sex is sex is sex, Gay, Straight, whatever. People who have a problem with that obviously have a problem with themselves. They are the true sickos and pervs, not Gays.

My opinion is that, although I`m straight, it doesnt matter what sex you are or what your preference you have. If you`re gay or lesbian I dont care. Be cool with me and I`m cool with you. The only problem I have with homosexuality is that I could never concieve of sucking another mans dick or letting another do so to me. To think of such makes me a little nauseos. I think people hate gays and lesbians is that they are so different.. as for religion, most of us here are going to "burn in hell" anyways including myself.. so party on..

(sorry little high hope i made sense)

As long as they are subject to a certain degree of employment discrimination (only concerning a select few professions), I really don`t care where someone decides to put their dick.

Just don`t wave it at me.

RYBEAR I AGREE WITH YOU!!!

Well kinda, rybear and those who share his (I`m assuming he`s a heterosexual male)opinions, it is very natural to feel that something that is not sexually arousing to you is disgusting. I mean I don`t find members of the same sex or their practices appealing either, BUT you must acknowledge that homosexuality is not a choice; this video supporting this conclusion. So what does it mean if sexuality is not a choice? It means that homosexualism is part of human sexuality and is hence hear to stay; consistently being 8% of the population. I mean it`s not like homosexuals are breading like rabbits, AND YET homosexuality persist. I could go into the BIOLOGICAL BASIS for sexuality but this would be boring to most readers, instead this is a quote from Richard Dawkins book The God Delusion which I believe fits the context:

FAITH AND HOMOSEXUALITY
In Afghanistan under the Taliban, the official punishment for homosexuality was execution, by the tasteful method of burial alive under a wall pushed over on top of the victim. The `crime` itself being a private act, performed by consenting adults who were doing nobody else any harm, we again have here the classic hallmark of religious absolutism. My own country has no right to be smug. Private homosexuality was a criminal offence in Britain up until - astonishingly - 1967. In 1954 the British mathematician Alan Turing, a candidate along with John von Neumann for the title of father of the computer, committed suicide after being convicted of the criminal offence of homosexual behaviour in private. Admittedly Turing was not buried alive under a wall pushed over by a tank. He was offered a choice between two years in prison (you can imagine how the other prisoners would have treated him) and a course of hormone injections which could be said to amount to chemical castration, and would have caused him to grow breasts. His final, private choice was an apple that he had injected with cyanide.120
As the pivotal intellect in the breaking of the German Enigma codes, Turing arguably made a greater contribution to defeating the Nazis than Eisenhower or Churchill. Thanks to Turing and his `Ultra` colleagues at Bletchley Park, Allied generals in the field were consistently, over long periods of the war, privy to detailed German plans before the German generals had time to implement them. After the war, when Turing`s role was no longer top secret, he should have been knighted and feted as a saviour of his nation. Instead, this gentle, stammering, eccentric genius was destroyed, for a `crime`, committed in private, which harmed nobody. Once again, the unmistakable trademark of the faith-based moralizer is to care passionately about what other people do (or even think) in private.

WHERE ARE OUR GAY BROTHERS ON THIS THREAD? DO NOT BE AFRAID TO DEFEND YOUR RIGHTS AND SEXUALITY, THERE ARE MANY WHO WILL SUPPORT YOU.

^ Amen! (or as I like to say `Gaymen!`)

Throughout the history of civilisation, many of the people who *made* civilisation have been Queers of various persuasions. Art, music, politics, science, philosophy, literature, cinema, in war and peace, Queers have created, defended, and improved the world as we know it, invented huge swaths of the very `culture` we enjoy, and, like these Gays in Iran, we have often done so with the boot-heel of an oppressive society on the back of our necks.

Despite the occasional Greek tyrant or Roman dictator, most Queers have accomplished what we have peacefully. Unlike almost any minority I can think of, we have fought for our rights without terrorism or violence, and if there has been bloodshed, the blood is usually ours. To the degree that we fight for our own rights, we fight for everyone`s. Straights benefit from our contributions as much, if not more.

Do you like culture? Technology? Science? Medicine? Entertainment? Thank a Queer!
