Alright here is the deal about Tanuki Suits in Mario Bros. 3. In Japan they have an animal not found in North America, called a tanuki. Tanuki kind of translates to raccoon dog but its a weak translation. From there in Japanese culture there are lots of Tanuki statues all over Japan.

By the way, check out the giant nuts between his legs.

Anyway, in Japanese mythology/history the tanuki has the ability to transform. In this case he turns into a statue so that he can be camouflaged and his enemies can`t find him. So that is what is going on with the Tanuki suit in Mario Bros. 3.

Also check out the movie Ponpoko or Pompoko a Japanese animated film made in 1994.
