I believe the vast majority of the catacombs are off limits, and you will be arrested -- if caught. I don`t know anything of the numbers, but if the poster of this is correct and there are 6,000,000 corpses` worth of bones, there must be a labyrinthine complex to `house` them all.

I think I read somewhere a few years ago on the BBC about secret clubs of people who go down into the catacombs from various secret entrances and have parties.

When I was in Paris I ventured into the catacombs under Notre Dame with a guide. Don`t know if these are the same catacombs, though.

During the Roman times Paris was built using the limestone found under the city and so the quarries were formed. Throughout the centuries following the Roman Empire the quarries grew and the networks of tunnels became more complicated and span an amazing 170 miles.

Then in 1786 the government under the orders of Monsieur Thiroux de Crosne, Lt. General of Police, and by Monsieur Guillaumot, Inspector General of Quarries decided that the quarries would be used as burial grounds during times of Plague and disease, where the cemeteries were filling up.

EDIT: A bit of a whiny vid because of the music. Reminded me of the part of Deus Ex in the catacombs. Man, that game kicked so much ass...

I`ve been here and even have photos of the some of the very same shots in the video. It`s really creepy and damp. They check your bags on the way out because people try to steal some poor bastards head.

There was a skull sitting on the checking table so it seems this happens quite a bit.
