Life On Other Planets

With numbers like these...I'd say the odds support it.

It`s such a mind fuck when you think about the vastness of the Universe, or the microscopic as well.
There is that great saying that there are more molecules in a glass of salt water, than there are glasses of salt water on the planet.

"There is that great saying that there are more molecules in a glass of salt water, than there are glasses of salt water on the planet."

Even more outstanding, is that there are more molecules in a teaspoon of salt water than there are teaspoons of salt water on the planet.

About the sand, there`s about 10000 per cm2 and about finding life on other planets, there`s about 1/200 chance on finding one.

The only problem is getting there, confirm it`s really alive or not and come back in one piece to tell about it... or atleast avoid any kind of alien parasite types.

Sometimes I wish I were immortal. I`d love to be able to find all the answers to everything in the universe that we know of and live to see the end of it.

I can grasp the vastness of space but the real mind fuck for me is thinking about "What started space?" and what started that? and what started that? and what started that? Now that`s an unanswerable mind fuck.

^^ I think soon enough we will be immortal, we can already synthesize any cell in the human body and soon enough well just replace stuff cept maybe the brain. So Id say ppl who are young right now are going to live pretty damn long.

In my 2nd Year Physics class, the prof has recently made presentations with the calculated requirements for life. I suggest you research this yourself because once you hear the requirements, it seems alot less likely then the old "the universe is really big so there haveto be more planets with life" logic.

Off the top of my head, I remember
-must be a "terrestrial" planet
-must have liquid water
-must have a moon to cause tides
-must have formed a significant time after the big bang(300 billion years?) to allow for essential elements to form inside stars.
-can`t be too close to the sun of the water will boil away
-presence and location of other "giant planets" and other threats
-must be large enough to sustain atmosphere

there`s alot more but the presentation was so interesting that I hardly stopped to write notes.

But seriously, research the calculations beyond this "grain of sand" crap because that simplemindedness is meaningless without taking a serious look at the known requirements.

****Research thoroughly and decide for yourself!!!!! :)

EDIT: some great responses on the next pages. I realize and apologize that most of the points fall under "terrestrial" requirements, i merely wanted to get specific with the later points.

and yes, these are only the requirements for life as WE know it, but until we know of life that formed in other ways it is logical to hold these as the standards.

--@@ Arcturus
I didn`t mean to offend anyone with the abstractness of the points i listed, i only intended for people to think beyond the "grain of sand" logic.

The tides are necessary to keep the water from being stagnant, and to spread sediment to form the soil necessary for multi-cellular life (plants).

It`s been shown that all elements but Hydrogen were created inside of suns and in order for a planet to be "terrestrial" it must have formed long enough after the creation of the universe to allow for stars to form and create, spread the vast variety of elements necessary for life.

Yes, my "-presence and location of other `giant planets` and other threats" point is very broad. What I meant was that it the planet must be in a solar system where celestial bodies such as asteroids don`t become a frequent enough problem that destroys all life that tries to form. In our solar system, it`s the presence of giant planets such as Jupiter that protect us from frequent asteroid impacts.

Although I may poorly represent the information my Prof presented in his lecture, It should not be taken out on him. I wish I had stopped to take more notes :(.

@ TwistedNoob are these bacteria that produce methane or that are believed to be created from nothing but methane? They might produce methane but they are formed from much more complex combinations of elements.

I loved Yakaji`s comment :)
