Seems like they filled it with steam, then closed off all the valves. When the steam condenses leaving a near vacuum, you get well over a million pounds of force from air pressure outside the tank.

edit for clarity: What you get is probably 10 to 14 psi of vacuum. If you multiply the surface area of an 8` x 50` tank, times 10psi (pounds per square inch), you get 1.8m pounds of force pressing inwards, and that`s even ignoring the pressure on the ends.

Otherwise, a vacuum pump would do the trick nicely.

I googled "imploding train car", but didn`t find an official explanation. The steam answer seems to be the concensus though.

ps. there`s 1400 tons of air above my house!

pps. Simple physics : You can`t get less than 0 pressure. In outer space (real vacuum) there is nothing pressing on you, that`s 0 pressure. Down by the sea, you get 2117 pounds of air above every square foot of the earth (14.7psi). All that air presses down by gravity, so you have pressure squeezing everything. Take the air away, and you would get 0 pressure. Beyond that, you still can`t get less than nothing. Vacuum pumps struggle with this, because the emptier you suck out a space, the less there is to suck on, until you end up doing wierd things like trying to freeze out the last traces of gasses (it`s like catching the last few stray flies or something).

^"you get well over a million pounds of force from air pressure outside the tank"

So are you saying that any vacuum created in earth atmosphere will get crushed due to million pounds of force.

101.325 kPa = 1 atmosphere = 1.01325 bar = 14.696 psi
1 psi = 1 lb/in^2
I think that is a little off from millions of pounds

there`s loads of experiments like this on spiked. you can do one easily with a coke can.

any vacuum created in the earths atmosphere requires a solid container to withstand the air pressure from the outside.

Well when steam condenses, it is 1/1000th the volume it was as a gas. So if the steam inside the tank was at atmospheric pressure, when it condenses it creates a negative pressure in the thousands of atmospheres.

Im going to have to go with the steam idea for now...seems more plausible
