Hmm, it seems that football was created before American football, therefore this is called football. Also, try taking off the pads and helmets, England does it, Wales does it, Scotland does it, Ireland does it, France does it, Italy does it, Australia does it, New Zealand does it, Samoa does it, South Africa does it, Argentina does it, etc etc.

Oh and by the way I`m not having a go at Spikers. I`m having a go at those faggots "jocks" or whatever Yanks call them. Those guys are pussy fucks.

@SatanSteve, sorry but no.
"While it is widely believed that the word "football" (or "foot ball") originated in reference to the action of a foot kicking a ball, there is a rival explanation, which has it that football originally referred to a variety of games in medieval Europe, which were played on foot."

"Football is the name given to a number of different team sports, all of which involve (to varying degrees) kicking a ball with the foot in an attempt to score a goal. The most popular of these sports world-wide is association football, also known as soccer and most commonly just football. The English language word "football" is also applied to gridiron football (which includes American football and Canadian football), Australian rules football, Gaelic football, rugby football (rugby league and rugby union), and related games. Each of these codes (specific sets of rules, or the games defined by them) is referred to as "football"."

"The word "football", when used in reference to a specific game can mean any one of those described above. Because of this, much friendly controversy has occurred over the term football, primarily because it is used in different ways in different parts of the English-speaking world. Most often, the word "football" is used to refer to the code of football that is considered dominant within a particular region. So, effectively, what the word "football" means usually depends on where one says it.

"The name "soccer" (or "soccer football") was originally a slang abbreviation of the word "association" from "association football" and is now the prevailing term in the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand where other codes of football are dominant."

"Documented evidence of what is possibly the oldest activity resembling football can be found in a Chinese military manual written during the Warring States Period in about the 476 BC–221 BC."

Simply its called football.

The foot connects with the ball about 99.999999% more than the foot does in American football. So it make sense to call English football... football as the foot is used to play the game. I suppose you`d expect some americans to get hands and feet confused so easily though. Also it was invented first.

That was pretty funny though made me laugh

who the fuck really cares? you call it football, they call it soccer, IT`S THE SAME THING. you`re not going to get them to call it something different, they`re not going to get you to call it anything else.

all different sports have a level of difficulty that far exceeds most peoples ability to play at the professional level. soccer/football/american football/rugby players will kick your ass if you step on their field regardless of the gear. I personally would not want a 180 lb guy to run at me full speed and tackle me without pads, nor would I want a 380 lb guy covered in another 50 lb`s of pads to hit me in anything smaller than a buick. so stfu. really now.

I posted this a while back and can`t be bothered to update it but I know it`s still true.

Spiked Humor - an American website.

Search the term "football" on Spiked and you get 123 entries (as at 6th Feb `08)

A quick look through reveals that:

39 of them relate to American football.
80 are football (or soccer for those who still don`t get it)
4 are for Australian rules football.

Clearly (as already known by the world less america), by a score of over 2:1 on an american site, football means football - not the shoulder padded, helmet wearing sport played in the states.

Also, just to show how little Americans actually care about their version of "football" - if you search for Superbowl, there are 26 entries and none of them are actually footage of a game!

What a pathetic sport American football must be if there`s not even one clip worthy of being posted on here.

I think what annoys me more than Football being called soccer is the way football is seen in the eyes of many US people as a sport for girls and pre-pubescent boys and the way the skill element is totally underrated. Look no further than Hollywood films for proof of that.

i`m an american and in my eyes football is either american football or soccer. and i never once thought that football (soccer) was a girly sport nor did i ever think that one form of football was better then the other, though i rather play soccer over american football. basically what i`m saying is even though a few americans will be idiots and be like "no that`s soccer" we`re not all like that. i usually assume when talking with someone from outside the states that if they say football they`re talking about what american`s call soccer and if i`m talking to someone from the states they`re probably talking about american football.

another point to bring up is that british english and american english use different words for things all the time not just football, so is there really any point in trying to correct each other when neither is wrong? we both speak english but in my opinion at times it`s almost 2 different languages. i`ve never been to england but if i did, i think i`d be lost as far as communication sometimes. of even australia, they speak english, but once again words are going to be different. so basically what i`m saying is we need to start respecting each other`s languages.

^^ SatanSteve has no idea.

Evil Monkey, that`s a good post. I`m an English teacher in South Korea and the majority of the text books I teach are based on American English. Most of the time, it`s fine, but about once a week, a word will come up that is said differently in England. I simply teach the children both words!

For me though, the two most irritating words are "soccer" (football) and "Fall" (Autumn).
