edit: for what it`s worth, I have lived in Japan for the past 5 years. I speak fluent Japanese (Osaka dialect, to be precise).

If you ask me, was the bomb the correct thing to do? What do I say? Hell yes. Look, I`m very sorry that tens of thousands were killed. I`m very sorry that it took this for them to realise they were beaten. And do not doubt for a second that they would have fought until the very last man, woman and child unless presented with utter, total, mind-numbing supremacy. The bomb showed this.

Once you`ve downed a bottle of tantakatan shochu with a grizzled Japanese veteran, you will realise the staying power of these people.

I say this with the utmost respect, yet also pity - they *would* have fought on. I guaran-goddamn-tee it. And you tools advocating a land invasion, or the much-vaunted but scant-proposed surrender, should get to know the Japanese culture.

In my outsider`s perception of Japanese culture, the commoners work harder and fight longer than damned near any other culture. The lords and masters thereof however are more than willing to avoid death by throwing aforementioned plebs against an indomitable enemy. During the 80s the West was enamored of the Japanese success - many thought it was a management technique. Gods no! The managers here I hold in absolute contempt. It`s the regular people on the street who will fight and struggle and die to uphold whatever they believe in (correctly or incorrectly is anther discussion, as in some respects I believe the Japanese were correct in opposing Western dominance in the Asia-Pacific).

Ironically, the Japan that I have come to love in my time here, in my humble opinion, survived *because* of these bombs. Japan could surrender cleanly, they kept their Emperor (as much a cultural icon as the Commonwealth Monarchy), and the vast majority of their traditions survived - as did the vast majority of their population (even with several hundred thousand dead from bombing).

Instead of harping on the positives, another view might be to consider the negatives.

What would the world be like without the bomb?
