How to Eat Sushi

This is generally correct - there are some problems here, but it`s closer to traditional sushi than most people in the U.S. will know. If you start eating sushi like this, and you sit at the counter, the chef will notice and give you better quality fish - I assure you. Even though I am "All American", I get very good sushi now with a small adjustment in manners.

If you eat in any high-end sushi joints, having experience with, or knowing sushi etiquette will get you more than your money`s worth.

It doesn`t help much if ur a redneck, or from Iowa.

Some problems there? I`d say a ton of problems...stupid bitch has paid for some Japanese etiquette course, read some books and maybe even spoken to some Japanese people; then made a video thinking she knows what she is doing.

For sure following this would be better than the way I`m sure some people eat, but don`t think that you are doing it correctly, or people aren`t laughing at you behind your back!

People forgot how formal Japanese tradition really is. My brother lives in Japan and the only way he learned to speak the language was he had to understand the culture. Japanese culture is very formal and has been since it`s creation, the slightest wrong gesture even if from a foreigner is considered rude. The idea is if you come to Japan you are entering their house and if it`s their house it`s their rules. Just polite manners to follow a host`s rules even if they seem akward and unnatural. You wouldn`t want 3rd world citizens entering the US and start cleaning their asses with their left hand right in the middle of the street now would you? Think of it as the same in Japan, but to a different degree.

^^^^ you don`t have to wait for the Japanese to think your are stupid. I`m American, and I`ll think you are stupid.

If you`re one of those people who fills up their soy sauce plate all the way, or picks apart their sushi, plenty of foodie people will think you are silly and uneducated. You`d look down on people who picked apart a McDonald`s hamburger and ate it with a fork and knife. It`s the same thing.

Stick to your homemade deer jerky, and Olive Garden salads with dressing "on the side", and all-you-can-eat Admiral`s Platter`s at Red Lobster, you culinary philistines.

Hi.
Some notes from a Native Japanese:
1)When pouring Sake you should always pick up the glass and present it to your host for them to fill.
2)When drinking sake there is no need to cup the glass with your other hand, that is the formal way to drink Ocha (green tea). If you cup your sake glass in this way, you most likly will be laughed at.
3)DO NOT scrape your waribashi (wooden chopsticks) together EVER. If there are alot of splinters use your fingers to remove them.
4) She put her hashi on the hashioki facing the wrong way.
5) In a public gathering DO NOT eat sushi with your hands. This is considered barbaric by many Japanese (my self included).

In conclusion, this is a video showing how to eat sushi in a very formal setting, like a persons home or at a company diner. If you are out at an izakaya (local bar) with your friends, most of these rules do not apply.
However you should never pass food from chopstick to chopstick ever.

You supposed to stick chopstick upright in a rice bowl. That signifies you are honoring the host. Japanese have food police watching your every move. They could acutally deduct some manga points if you don`t follow their rule. And if you continue to violate these rule they could even go far as blurring out parts in porn. They are extremely sensitive and serious about their custom. So be very careful.
