Flaming Crater - Darvaza Turkmenistan

In the heart of the Karakum desert of Turkmenistan the Darvaza Gas Crater or The Burning Gates give off a glow that can be seen from miles away during the dark night. The large crater is a result of a Soviet gas exploration accident in the 1950’s. It was created when a Soviet drilling rig was drilling for natural gas fell into an underground cavern resulting in a crater which today measures roughly 60 meters in diameter and 20 meters deep. The huge crater was set alight shortly after being discovered and has been burning ever sense. The recognizable smell of burning natural gas can be detected from a distance and becomes quite strong as you near the hot edge of the crater.

interesting. wonder why they don`t fill it in. Wonder if it would go out due to lack of oxygen if you fill it in. What a waste of a natural resource.

I thought they added the smell to natural gas and propane so that you`d notice if there was a gas leak and not wind up dead.

SuperDan is right, Natural Gas is odourless. The rotten egg smell is added to Natural Gas so that people can detect a leak. So therefor the description is wrong.

It was lit so that poisonous gases don`t leak and poison/suffocate a village

EDIT: Upon more research, it appears Natural Gas in its natural state (not pure) has sulfur in it, among other things. Which is probably what he`s smelling.

Propane, a refined petroleum product, has no odour so it has a smell added to it for safety purposes. Usually t-butyl mercaptan, with a rotting-cabbage-like smell, or thiophane with a rotten-egg smell.

Methane is a natural gas and has a definate odor caused by Hydrogen sulfide.

The description was copied from the guy who went there. So I assume either the hole contains methane, or propane is not odourless once it has been burnt.

So while they force people to adopt newer cleaner burning technology in peoples homes and cars, they let this go on for 50 years+ without doing shit about it. Nice.
