Dark City (1998) - Trailer

Dark City is an underrated sci-fi/noir film from 1998 about a man who wakes up in a world that isn't real, which is controlled by people who all look alike. Through his journey, he discovers strange God-like powers within himself. Huh, reminds me of another sci-fi film that was released a year after this one...

This was a movie far ahead of its time and I think one that could make a run if it hit the theaters again. Good post.

Did you folks know that the rooftop sets from this film were reused a year later in a little film called "The Matrix"?

Almost every bit of the Matrix (except for all of that ham-handed pseudo-philosophical psychobabble filler) fits in with the elements of Dark City. People oblivious to the true nature of their fake world, hive-minded agents- err, Strangers changing things around at will, one man who unknowingly possesses their powers- I can go on.

Greatest coincidence in recent years, right there...

This film is an all time sci-fi classic. Another overlooked film with similar themes that came out around the same time was "The Thirteenth Floor"

If you like this genre and haven`t seen Dark City or The Thirteenth Floor. I`d recommend you check them out.

Interesting - sounds like some similar sound effects to "The Fifth Element" as well.

One of my favorite movie... I rented that movie twice. However it is my first time seeing the trailer and I don`t like it. Maybe that`s why it didn`t work so well. On a side note, the title reminds me another underrated movie called "sunshine"

This movie was indeed superior to "The Matrix." It`s a genre I generally dislike, this whole "people oblivious to the true nature of their fake world" thing. It`s a bad idea, if you ask me, because it`s too unmanageable, too hard to explain everything. "Dark City" comes closest to doing it right, mostly because it`s only a limited experiment with a smaller population. And it`s one of the only movies I`ve ever seen that has an excellent "magic fight" at the end. One thing that bothered me, though, was the soundtrack. There was this CRAZY symphonic music that NEVER STOPPED throughout the entire movie. (None of my friends noticed it. Dumb-asses.)
<P>
Don`t even mention "The 13th Floor" here. That movie was pure crap. Bad idea. Nobody would EVER design a virtual world that way. It was predictable and poorly thought-out.

Okay...I really, really enjoyed the movie, having seen it a few years ago. But the trailer...sucked. I would have avoided seeing the movie if all I had to go on was the trailer, and that would have been a travesty.

Both films were made in Australia too. I think the studios thought that the concepts would go over the heads of most of the dumb-ass audience to commit the time and money to make them in Hollywood. One payed off one didn`t. But it was still a very good movie. Hows Queensland, Townsville?
