Army Rejects Dragon Skin Body Armor

Once again the US Army proves that it can care less about the safety of our men and women in uniform. Dragon Body Armor has been tested by the FBI, CIA, many police forces and everyone in the world agrees that it is the best, except of course the US Army. In a test for the History Channel's military show, "Mail Call", the vest repelled nine rounds of pointed steel ammunition from an AK-47 and 35 rounds of 9 mm, all fired into a 10-by-12-inch configuration on the vest. In "Test Lab", also on the History Channel, the vest withstood a total of 120 rounds, fired from both an AK-47 (7.62 × 39 mm) and MP5 (9 x 19 mm). In another demonstration on the Discovery Channel series "Future Weapons", a Dragon Skin vest withstood numerous rounds from an AK-47, an MP5, and an M4 carbine (5.56 x 45 mm), and a point-blank detonation of an M67 grenade. While the vest was heavily damaged (mainly by the grenade), there was no penetration of the actual armor.

If someone who has an interest in prompting this first rate `body amour` has influence on this news organization does not alter the fact that it is going to save lives.

^You`re not paying attention to the fact that it was the Army representative who made that claim. Having just watched a demonstration where the vest was shot from 20` with a 9mm rifle and an AK47 in which NONE of the bullets penetrated I`m not sure that the Army guy was telling the truth or for hat matter has any idea what truth is.

Maybe if you listen again you will get more out of it.

Blue_devil you are correct in that governments do not care about troops. But this does not mean that this blatant advertisement for sub standard crap is anything other than capitalism gone mad.

Edited as new information has been presented below, suggesting that Dragonskin was not failing beside the current body armor due to ballistic impact, but failing due to problematic performance due to environmental factors (like desert heat, for example).

It may be situationally better for, say, FBI and Police Officers who are not reasonably expecting to encounter high temperatures - this naturally means it is a poor choice for soldiers in Iraq.

Here is the problem with dragon armor.

The glue doesn`t hold the clay plates together in HOT weather conditions. So what you have is a bunch of holes in the armor. Also once the armor is damaged it isn`t feasible to replace the clay scales in the field.

Where as the current body armor you pop the plating out and can replace it in a few minutes.

Of course, that would make sense...and of course, that government doesn`t care about it`s soldiers.
One of my superiors once said: You`re all like firewood, meant to be burned.
politicians + government + contractors = mafia

Money could be more important over troops , considering that Money is a very important factor in war and you might need it. And god knows how expensive this armor could be. Theres always another side to a story.

I`ve heard that some tests faild miserably as Ahlspiess pointed out. I`m not saying what we have is better, but wouldn`t it suck if the Army bought a shit load of these and they did fail when the troops needed them?

As we saw in Somalia, Army generally doesn`t either wear their plates or even plan missions properly...so no guarantee that they`d wear these properly either. Give `em to the Marines! We`d figure out how to make `em work. ;o)

Nothing wrong with dying for your country, but it`s better if you can make the other guy die for his instead.

@ ahlipiess

It looked to me like the the plates weren`t just glued, but sealed in place by the surrounding fabric as well. Besides, why would a company trying to protect lives JUST glue those plates in place? or glue them in place with a crappy glue that can`t even take just over 100 degrees?

The replacement of the armor is a valid argument, however, when the vest has such superior results it won`t need to be replaced. Tests showed that the armor wouldn`t even let 120 rounds pierce the vest within a 10`x12` area. I doubt a soldier is going to take more than 120 rounds in his chest every hour.

Edit: Do bear in mind that news of tests failing could just be propaganda, or maybe I`m just completely wrong. Wouldn`t be the first time.

War in this day in age is generally legal.. the "war" in iraq, is an illegal war in turn, making the US government the biggest terrorists of all time..

Terrorism - The unlawful use or threatened use of force or violence by a person or an organized group against people or property with the intention of intimidating or coercing societies or governments, often for ideological or political reasons.

(Quick note.. the USA had no legal consent by the UN too invade IRAQ, thus making the invasion one of the biggest war crimes in the history of the world..)

Read that and tell me it isn`t EXACTLY what the current situation in IRAQ is? and if you can argue it, do so.. if you disagree simply because you love blind faith like most Americans.. pick up a fucking book or something you retards..

Here are excerpts from the military test.

"More troubling to Army testers was the near complete delamination of the disks from the Kevlar backing within the Dragon Skin on several of the environmental tests."

"After being subjected to the heat test Dragon Skin vest failed on the first shot. X-ray photos of the vest show the disks slipped off their backing, exposing portions of the chest area without any ceramic protection."

"Certain areas of the adhesive hardened and become brittle and when that happened, they all dropped down,"

"Further tests in minus-60-degree cold, immersion in oil and diesel fuel showed similar delaminations and shot failures"

I agree in optimal conditions th e Dragon Skin is better but these problems need to be fixed if you want to put the Dragon Skin in the field.
