What Makes Us Human – Part 1 – “Big Head...

While our closest animal relatives have been swinging from the trees, humans have built a world that is vastly more complex. What are the defining features that have allowed us to do this? Are we special, and separate from all other animals, or are we just an especially successful mammal? Warning for the easily faint, there will be a real human brain examined.

Your welcome Bold, hope everyone enjoys this.

Update: The second part is found on related media it is called "What makes us Human – Part 2 – “Copy Cats”" it is also located in my profile uploads.

I like the discussion going on here so far. My favorite part is 31:27 when they discuss Shakespear`s Othello with Robert Dunbar an Evolutionary Psychologist.

This is brilliant. It`s a question that I`ve always found fascinating. For some reason my computer isn`t liking the google video too much though.

And...Quick question, that is totally unrelated to this... Forum registration is down, no image verification shows up! Who do I complain to?

What makes us special is our brain`s neocortical region...consisting of millions, if not billions of grey-matter neurons. Neanderthals had bigger brains and were capable of creating stone tools for hunting, but they lacked the essential component (neocortex)that makes humans capable of high faculty thought. This perhaps explains why homo sapiens were the first to create language - the prerequisite for advanced human cultures. Elephants have bigger brains but what really matters is the brain to body mass ratio, which is most pronounced in humans. Chimpanzees and bonobos are our closest relatives, and we share much in common with them...but they simply lack the neural architecture that would enable them to think beyond immediate, low faculty concerns such as caring for their young or procuring food.

Also flyingspagh,

Chimps are known to form patrol groups to chase off, or even murder other male chimps not part of their immediate group.. This seems like fore planning as I understand it.

Awesome programme. I wish we got stuff like this on BAsic cable :(

The only way you`d see this in the states if it was re-aired on PBS. We lack decent programming here... NG, History Channel, and Discovery are good starts though.

^ That sounds like something a religious debater would say, Trunk Monkey!

History channel and Discovery are pretty good, but the is a lot of poorly produced schlock made for the casual audiences for both channels as well.
