A "different" take? Hardly.

Solar power plants of this same design have been operating in the Mojave desert for more than 20 years. Though I give kudos to Toyota for joining the party.

I recently worked on a truely innovative technique for collecting solar power. Can`t talk about it much since a patent is pending...but it promises to make solar power as cheap as coal. That`s been the real challenge of solar power, bringing the cost down to competitive levels. Going big with your design has the drawback of requiring a lot of raw material to build it...we`re hoping to reverse that trend by thinking small.

Be looking for exciting news coming out of Arizona in the coming months.

^^ I`ve been hearing that for years and yet still nothing financially viable exists.
it would probably be easier w/o the oil cartels though

EckJerome: Keep us posted man. We need some alternative power schemes, so if yours works out, I want to know where to buy one. Or two.

neon neophyte, it should be noted that Toyota has nothing to do with this project, they just sponsored the production of this video.

Calling it the Toyota Solar Tower is a misnomer as it was actually made by Solucar and is called PS10

Using all this great tech just to run a steam turbine seems wasteful to me. Losing so much energy to heat is the opposite of efficient, isn`t it? There must be better ways to go direct from sunlight to large-scale electricity, but all the new powerful generation sources always seem to fall back on the old steam turbine model. I LIKE what they`ve done here, but can`t we please get past the musty old steam turbine?

If there would be a better way of converting sunlight to electricity dont you think they would use it?Oh no thats right the big bad oilcompanies are witholding that technology, even the state of the art nuclear powerplants arent allowed to use it they still have to use the old steam turbine model.

you look simple and cheap FSM, but im sure you could change if you just tried to explain why instead of just stating your dumb thoughts

I want to poke you in the eye with a very hot frenchfry- foamy

There`s research being conducted with nano-surfaces that mimic the way plants use solar energy for photosynthesis. Check out the BBC "Visions of the Future" series, part 3.
