I dunno about making laptops yourself, but making a desktop computer yourself will beat ANY prebuilt computer from any company.
That said, fuck Dell, Compaq, HP, even Alienware. None can compare to the do-it-yourselfer.

ive been using my dell laptop for almost 4 years now. doubt the batteries will blow up anytime seeing as how they only last for about 5 minutes off AC now...

I got a dell. Its been about 4 years now. Batteries last 15 min with screen dimmed without AC. Screen is cracked at the base from opening it (it now has to be held with a knee or hand). And in about 30 sec it heats up hotter than an oven, and when it is hot it lags horribly. The little P.O.S. fan in this sucker doesn`t keep it cool.

I need a new computer.
