When I was a grad-student, one of my profs did a piece of research showing that the vast, vast majority of children who are killed are murdered, not by any stranger, but by their own parents. We spend all this time on pedo-panics, filling our kids with fears of "stranger danger" and internet predators, when, if we really wanted to protect them, we`d ban parents!

Seriously, though, a big step in the right direction would probably be to strengthen emancipated minor laws that give young people more say and more ability to get out of dangerous family situations - to get a "divorce" from their parents, as has happened in a few, well-publicised cases.

Probably won`t see a cold-war era, black & white educational film touting that, though.

I think you`re missed my point a bit. Even the FBI Uniform Crime Reports show that the vast majority of assailants are known to their victims. This isn`t a matter of tweaking stats selectively or cherry-picking data. Law enforcement, crime prevention specialists and self-defense instructors (one of the hats I wear) will all tell you this.

One of the reasons that those of us who work in the self-defense field are bothered by the popular hysteria about "stranger-danger" is that it often detracts from awareness about where the biggest threats are; in the home.

This is not to say that we shouldn`t be aware and prepared for threats from unknown attackers. We should be proportionate, however, which means focusing more on threats from and within families, and allowing more avenues for abused, neglected and threatened kids to get out of bad household situations.

Too, if we do parse the data more thoroughly (and I have, that`s the other hat I wear as a researcher), it`s no coincidence that we find kids who grow up in dangerous/abusive homes are at a higher risk for subsequently falling prey to strangers outside the home, for a whole host of reasons too detailed to list here, but not hard to imagine (runaways from home ending up on the street, incest/molestation victims who mistake abuse for affection, just to name a couple).

Again, the need to pay more attention to home life and allow "escape routes" if necessary still stands.
