Interesting, but how old is this video? 10 years? 15?

The solar updraft tower is a proposed type of renewable-energy power plant. Air is heated in a very large circular greenhouse-like structure, and the resulting convection causes the air to rise and escape through a tall tower. The moving air drives turbines, which produce electricity. A research prototype operated in Spain in the 1980s.

So, 20? 25? =]

... and I like his mustache.

I have to ask why only 1 fan would not adding a few more boost the power output making it even more cost efftive.

He was a reporter on Beyond 2000 in Australia.

I`m unsure if it ran anywhere else - or if it was an original Australian program. But it was during the 80s, and early to mid 90s.

It was a pretty fascinating show. I haven`t seen much like it since.

I think that particular reporter`s name was Ian something or other... I could be wrong.

For decent power production you need a much taller tower, and a much larger area.

Also, laying down a rock base instead of simply just ground will allow for better output during the night.

Yay physics \m/

This is what the Australians have in mind for 2012: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0tWlP0knKQU

Btw, that Spain model is a prototype build in 1982, wiki it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_updraft_tower

Grae: The man`s name is Ian Finley (or something like that). The show is originally Australian, I think, but I saw it in Holland, subtitled, and I think I even saw it in the US on the Discovery Channel or some such.

Blast from the past, though. I had totally forgotten about it. If you find more, neon, upload some clips. It`s good stuff.

whoa i never heard about this, where have i been? i`ve heard of solar collectors heating water to move turbines but not to heat air. and it`s been decades, has this type of power plant taken up speed or is it kinda dead? looks interesting
