It is most likely another short person that is using arm extensions(when he lifts his "upper half" the arms bend at an odd angel)for when he is cut in half and the magician is clearly blocking the view when they put him back together, the short person is probably putting their legs into extensions.

Smokey, you`d actually say "sawn into a quarter".

I don`t mean to have a go at your English, it`s just I`ve been teaching Korean kids all day and I`m sick of their mistakes!

As for the trick, I have NO idea how he did it (after watching it once... I will have to watch again) and it`s rare that a trick gets passed me!
