Looking good in a crash, probably the only use the smart has.

I wish smart made an electric version.

With regards to the video, does it really matter how good the car looks if the people in it are dead?

^agreed
they didnt show if the feet would have been crushed, or (had they put a dummy) wether neck injuries would result. all we know is that no ones gonna steal it cuz the door still works properly, effective thwarting any potential car thief

70mph dead on into a brick wall in any car will turn you into pulp. Youre body will be slightly more intact in a smart though.

You might have missed the point, the test wasn`t about how the car looks after the crash, but the fact that the car retained it`s stuctural integrity.

Of course, it would have made more sense to try it with a dummy, but you don`t need a test to tell you that crashing at 70mph is fatal.

Yea thats an impressive crash, there are most cars twice that things size don`t fare that well, though this being very light helps too, it just doesn`t have the same intertia going into the crash.

Going from 70-0mph can yeild forces on the driver`s body of up to and even beyond 2kN. Sure, it`s great that the car stays in shape, but to be honest I don`t think the driver would.

they make cars so the front end collapses to absorb some of the impact where as in a smart car you won`t get much of a damper....sucks for your neck

tokentiki: sounds like you`re one who hasn`t actually looked at the information about the Smart ForTwo. I`m actually thinking about getting one. not only are they quite safely designed, but they get excellent gas mileage too. 40mpg roughly. Sucks that the turbo diesel version isn`t available here in the US, cause i heard that can get roughly 80mpg.

You say that most cars are made so the front end can collapse to absorb some impact, yet the smart car doesn`t have that. But what i think you`re failing to realise is that in pretty much EVERY regular car, you pretty much just have the body and the frame.... and if your car get`s hit with enough force, there`s a high chance that you could wind up almost literally kissing your engine block goodbye. I mean.... the firewall in a car (between the engine compartment and the cabin of the car, in case you weren`t sure) is NOT the most durable thing ever. With the Smart, you`re basically sitting inside of a steel cage, with a nice sized steel plate between you, and whatever is in front of you (by the way.... in case everyone also wasn`t sure of this.... the engine in a Smart is a rear-engine. pretty much the only things up front are fill ports for i believe antifreeze and washer fluid, as well as easy access to headlight bulbs). Hit a concrete divider like that with your average coupe or luxury sedan, and i`m pretty sure you`ll find quite a bit going awry in the cabin of the vehicle as well.

And as the others said.... going from 70mph to 0mph in a second would probably wind up killing you anyway (if not causing you to have some serious brain damage).... but they are quite safe. even the short wheelbase is a safety feature. REALLY suggest those of you thinking it`s a horrendously unsafe car check out the safety features of it. And even safety aside.... you can get quite a few killer features in a car that`s price pretty much maxes out at less than $20k. heated leather seats w/ leather interior, automatic climate control, belt tension limiter (should there be too much pressure pulling on the seatbelt during a crash or seriously heavy braking, the seatbelt will loosen slightly, to try to relieve a bit of that pressure to prevent more injuries such as broken ribs from the seatbelt), all kinds of traction control and stuff to help improve handling/acceleration/steering/bad weather driving.... quite the nice car. I`m actually probably going to a Smart dealership tomorrow with a friend to look at them, seeing as i`ve never had the opportunity to sit in one, even though i`ve been thinking about getting one for MONTHS. They`re supposed to be very spacious too for how small they are.

At 1:39 you can see that the concrete barrier it hits is slanted to the right. I`d like to see it hit a barrier of the same size head on and not be predisposed to slide to the right but rather to take all the energy into itself.
