I agree totally with Pat about the celibacy issue; when sexual pleasure - and all pleasure, really, is constructed as a "sin", while pain, suffering, blood, death, torture etc. are constructed as "holy", it`s bound to screw people up. Do that for thousands of years, and you basically get a backwards, inside-out, guilt-ridden, forbidden fruit, schizophrenic "society" like ours; obsessed with sex on one hand, obsessed with denying it on the other.

This is why kids can play army, but if they play "doctor", they get punished. Kids books can show battles, warfare and brutality, but when Maurice Sendak`s "In the Night Kitchen" shows Mickey`s penis, the book gets banned. And of course, Jesus` half-naked, dying, bleeding corpse adorns every "decent" Christian`s home, but nude statues in parks and museums are "pornographic".

I can`t tell if I was born a few thousand years too late or a few centuries too early, but I really hope society gets over this whole monotheism thing, soon. Bad idea...maybe the worst.

Edit for Sober below: In addition to what smokemylungs points out, let me also add the example of Fascist Spain. The Church collaborated extensively with the Franco dictatorship, and continues to be one of Franco`s biggest defenders, a generation after his death.
