The average helicopter (and for that matter Osprey) all wobble a bit while hovering, especially that close to the ground. We also don`t know if it was breezy when the footage was shot. I`d say given what we know it was quite stable. :)

Awesome historical vid, good to see where our modern marvels really come from.

BTW, the V-22 Osprey seriously sucks ass. It can`t lift anything compared to the CH-53 series helicopters.

Hey, GregP, this is the very concept that brought about the V-22. The fuselage as well as the placement of the rotors are nearly identical to the Osprey. I think it`s safe to say that this is the V-22`s Grandfather.

This was before they had digital control systems and autonomous autopilots.
That pilot was holding it steady with elbow grease and pure skill.

Just like the early B1 flying wings, the aircraft were so unstable that only with the addition of fly-by-wire conputer systems are they possible to fly.

I`ll bet they never got that prototype above to transition without killing someone.

And yes, the americans have heard of the British jump-jet... they bought it and renamed it the AV8B Harrier II. The Marines have 8 squadrons, but it is not as well loved by the yanks as it is in the U.K.
