German Police Dogs To Wear Shoes

BERLIN - Police dogs in the western city of Duesseldorf will no longer get their feet dirty when on patrol — the entire dog unit will soon be equipped with blue plastic fiber shoes, a police spokesman said Monday.

"All 20 of our police dogs — German and Belgian shepherds — are currently being trained to walk in these shoes," Andre Hartwich said. "I'm not sure they like it, but they'll have to get used to it."

The unusual footwear is not a fashion statement, Hartwich said, but rather a necessity due to the high rate of paw injuries on duty. Especially in the city's historical old town — famous for both its pubs and drunken revelers — the dogs often step into broken beer bottles.

"Even the street-cleaning doesn't manage to remove all the glass pieces from between the streets' cobble stones," Hartwich said, adding that the dogs frequently get injured by little pieces sticking deep in their paws.

The dogs will start wearing the shoes this spring but only during operations that demand special foot protection. The shoes comes in sizes small, medium and large and were ordered in blue to match the officers uniforms, Hartwich said.

"Now we just have to teach the dogs how to tie their shoes," he joked.

I`ve seen videos of those German police dogs taking down armed gunmen in literally under 3 seconds. Funny looking shoes or not, I wouldn`t fuck with them.

would the shoes take away the dogs ability to scratch you?

i know scratching is not very damaging and that police dogs bite your arm to bring you down ect., but its quite painful, my dog has proved this to me several times. wouldn`t it be useful against a criminal?

and i don`t care how well these dogs can walk in the shoes. when its show time those shoes better come off or the dog just cant run the same.

That`s cool that they`re looking out for the safety of the animals, but the dogs don`t look as ferocious as before.

Still wouldn`t wanna get in the path of one, but still.

1. I think its a matter of Run poorly or not at all lets face it the criminal will get away if the dog is limping from glass wounds in the paw.

2. If they designed the tread grip where the paw should be I doubt it will be that disadvantageous for the dog.

Short story.

I once had a dog who had to lose a front-leg late in his life due to cancer on the shoulder, and despite his age (around 13 at the time) he managed to adapt....but once he did, he began to age substantially, growing weaker and less excitable with each passing month.

What certainly helped him, though, was regular walks, even when he was getting closer to 15, he would seemingly muster his energy for that solitary walk in the evening. However, the path we usually took passes by several spots where morons, idiots and chavs hang out to drink and act like retards.

One night, my dog had the grave misfortune of stepping in some glass that was hidden in the grass beside the path, cut his remaining foreleg and paw badly. He couldn`t walk, and his condition rapidly deteriorated. A few days later, we were forced to put him down.

Suffice to say, when you`re so reliant on the limbs you`re given, there are no precautions deep enough you can take, so while perhaps a little silly looking, gotta say it`s a good idea for those police dogs to wear them.

@Enthasius:

That really sucks to hear dude. Props to the dog though for sticking with it as much as he could, and for you being right there beside him. I couldnt imagine going through that with my dog.
