The Tank Man 6/8

This is a documentary about quite possibly the most famous unknown man in all of China. During the protests in 1989 at Tiananmen Square in Beijing China after hundreds possibly even thousands had been killed this man was still defiant and stood up for the people of China. I recommend looking up more information on Wikipedia (naturally) about the Gang of Four, Cultural Revolution, and Mao Zedong. An amazing man.

i`m pretty sure they know about tiananmen square, that`s why the boy said `89 to the girl. i`m almost certain they`re trying to act dumb on camera in fear of trouble. this is similar to a massacre in taiwan called 228 for febuary 28. the guy mao zhedong kicked out of china took over taiwan, and there was an event that led to demonstrations. the military shot ppl on the streets and began to kidnap and excecute community leaders and activists. until recently, taiwanese never talk about the incident in public in fear of the secret police. and taiwan wasn`t communist during that time, more like a dictatorship. i don`t think the problem is communism, it`s the too much power and corruption that a government can have. when they know they can get away with anything they have free reign to do whatever they want.

it`s so ironic. the communist revolution depended on the working class, and now they`re keeping the lower class too weak to do anything and depend on the middle class to be content enough not to care.

those students are scared, can`t blame them

I 100% agree with stbasdf. Guranteed the students acted dumb infront of the camera to avoid Government punishment or something. This was an AMAZING Documentary on the Tiananmen Square Tank Man.

My history teacher brought it up in class and I sat there thinking it made no effect on China, but I was 100% wrong it changed China, it made it was China is today.

It depends where those kids are from, If they grew up in Beijing they would probably know, but outside of the city likely not. Don`t forget the Chinese government controls the all the media with an iron fist, especially back in in the late 80`s early 90`s before the internet. Plus this was a foreign journalist`s photograph and I guarantee never published in within the country.

When I was traveling in China a few years back, I met this kid in Xi`an, who was playing the guitar at this hostel I was at. (he actually was pretty good and knew a lot of western tunes) Anyway, I told him I live in Japan and he started railing against he Japanese and telling me all about Nanjing etc. When I pointed out that that was 50 years ago and besides China isn`t exactly innocent, Mao killed millions during his so called Great Leap Forward, then there is Tibet, and Tiananmen Square. He had no Idea what I was talking about. Had never heard about Tiananmen and didn`t believe me. Honestly They have no freaking Idea. On top of that the Chinese government intentionally fans the flames of the anti-Japanese sentiment there to take the focus off their own transgressions.
