UK Declares War on Digital Piracy

Article Submitted by blizzloader.

Britain strong-arms ISPs to work with entertainment industries to curtail illicit downloading.

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain will impose legislation on Internet service providers (ISPs) by April 2009 if they do not work with the music and film industries to curb illegal downloading, the government said on Friday.

The government released a strategy paper to address the problem of illegal file sharing after the two sides failed to come to a voluntary agreement over how best to tackle the issue.

The paper said the government would still prefer a voluntary solution, but said it would start consulting on possible legislation later this year.

The move follows a decision by the French government to ban access to the Internet for those who repeatedly download material illegally, and follows years of lobbying by the music industry which has been damaged by piracy.

Industry estimates put the number of broadband users in Britain who download files illegally at around 6 million.

"Within the space of only four months, two governments, in France and Britain, have now embraced the simple idea that Internet service providers are uniquely positioned to help in the fight against digital piracy," John Kennedy, the head of the international music trade body IFPI, said.

"This is a sea-change in attitude."

The ISPs would prefer a voluntary agreement and argue that as mere conduits, it is not their place to police the Internet.

But the government has been moved to act to give a boost to the country's creative industries. Global music sales were down around 10 percent in 2007 and the industry estimates that tens of billions of illegal tracks were swapped online in the year.

Britain's leading Internet service providers include BT, Virgin Media, Carphone Warehouse, Tiscali, BSkyB and Orange.

i fucking hate my dogs.
They bark and bark and bark and bark all the while wagging their tail.
and we know barking doesn`t solve anything. Just yelling in the direction of the disturbance.
Its even more annoying when one barks and the other has to join it without knowing why hes barking.

you see, declaring war on digital piracy is just barking at it. sure they can double team the internet, but in the end it`ll just be so fucking annoying, they`ll just end up getting kicked down the stairs.

They`ll probably just pick a handful of people and use them as scapegoats to try to scare everyone else out of doing it. It might stop a few people, but I`m willing to bet the the vast majority keep downloading illegally.

Fucking lame.

Like WilliVanilla said, This is just bullshit.

Probably just a, "oh, we are on it, I promise!", PR move.

Yeah they do pick a handful of people to fuck over for the rest of their lives. I remember seeing some lady that got sued for like $220,000 and was already poor. Now she`s fucked. that`s like $360/month for the rest of her life.

maybe if these companies tried actually catching up with modern technology instead of fighting it piracy wouldn`t be so rampant. Not to say it would be non-existent. Piracy will always be around, no matter how you distribute your product.

Maybe they should make it all worth paying for first?

^ I totally agree with you guys.

And "Global music sales were down around 10 percent in 2007"?

Boo-freakin-hoo.

Did they ever stop to think that it might have gone down because the industry has been producing ~a lot~ of terrible music recently? I don`t know about you guys, but I`m not dishing out $18 for that crap, even if I like one or two songs on the album.

If they really are going to continue to sell CDs and Movies at this ridiculous price, no one is going to buy them- especially if they blowed. So of course people are downloading. In some cases, if they liked it so much, they will actually go out and purchase it. The art of music and movies online actually helps the Media Corporations; if only they would get their heads out of their arses and see it.

They need to get with the times and the technology. Also, come on... yes a government is supposed to regulate laws- but they are also supposed to understand a good judgment from bad judgment (aka regulating sales at a cheaper price instead of hounding its people for finding an alternative method of achieving what they want). Government is supposed to stand for its people, not side with corporate media for the greater good of Kanye West`s paycheck.

BS

fuck any legislation focused on the internet, the internet is what it is because it has more freedom then you can find most places in the world today >.<

and I also believe that there has been very shitty movies, games and music released lately and alot of it isnt worth even stealing!

If only there was a way to buy high quality music(im talkin about 320k/s bitrate or equivalent) then i would be more than happy to pay $1 per song. As it is i refuse to pay for a shitty 128k copy protected itunes song. Thats why i pirate.

"The ISPs would prefer a voluntary agreement and argue that as mere conduits, it is not their place to police the Internet."

Fucking right!

People this is IT. I`ve seen CCTV-cameras being put up all other the place and more and more security in Great Britain, I was fine with that, but this is the fucking last straw. They are building a Big Brother world! Seriously! The cameras are there and now an information police who`s job it is to controll what`s going on the internet.

The potential with these kinds of government enforcements on IPSs are just the start. Soon tey will block all websites that is critical to the government or host software that the government doesn`t like.

Trust me it won`t stop with piracy, soon they will monitor all communications after "suspected criminal activity".

If this stuff gets into place. There is however a solution. Just encrypt your stuff. Programs like µTorrent already has a function that encrypts all data it sends and you can just use WinRAR and make an archive, encrypt it and put a password on it that way. They won`t have any idea of what the hell you are sending, they just see random ones and zeros

Meh... I download movies that look mediocre at best... and if it ends up being good I go pay for it cuz the people involved deserve my money if its good.

Same goes for music...

not to mention the music industry and movie industry are greedy fucks who could seriously care about the artistic value of what they produce-- at least the people at the highest levels of the industries are.
