Too Windy for a Wind Turbine

Windmill collapse during a storm in Denmark. The braking system failed while two technicians worked in the turret at the top. The technicians were able to get out before the collapse. A 19 meter piece of the blade was thrown 20 metres away; Smaller pieces were sent more than 500 meters away.

There`s a bunch of `wind farms` near where I live and those things are amazing. Too bad we don`t have them everywhere. But then again who really wants clean energy? yuk yuk.

looks to me like the braking system made it explode like that not the wind...it was going too fast when the break kicked in.

Just to point something out: Wind mills actually produce less electricity when they go fast...
love the tags!

It would have been so cool if we had the footage from a high speed camera!!

It blew up because the brakes weren`t working from the start. No matter how hard the wind blows they are designed to spin at the same rate, braking if necessary (~14.5 rpm for the biggest ones). Even on low wind days you will see them turning, although they usually aren`t producing power because the generator gear disengages (using power form the grid to do so).

I did not know they needed to be braked or they would blow up.
Does more "braking" mean more energy produced, as it does in a hybrid car?

No extra power, it actually steals power from the grid to initialize the brakes, which waste the extra energy as heat. When they start up they actually draw significant power from the grid to get going.

The preferred method of slowing them down is called aerodynamic stalling, which changes the tilt of the blades to make them less aerodynamic; slowing them down.

i thought it was the brekaing that created the energy. Like in cars.
