natives had a very vibrant and beautiful culture.

but now its dead, they are all (okay okay 90-something%) obese, alcoholics, with a poor immune system and a true drain on social safety nets.

here in Canada, as a reward for being born native you get:
-free education up to and including university (room, board, tuition, everything)
-all medical expenses paid from cradle to grave
-special attention given in school through excessive social programs
-a paid furnished home with indoor plumbing, running water, electricity, tv, internet, ect. (and the right to sue the government if they believe it isn`t being well maintained {work generally reserved for and paid to people of that tribe, which doesn`t get done because they were at the bar till it reopened)

why? because 400 years ago we came over and took over the continent. not that its right to `steal` (since they didn`t think anyone owned land, therefore no theft can be committed if the concept does not exist) but not Canada is run by westerners who have built the great infrastructures we use every day, the same ones the natives seem to want to use aswell.....

They are not treated like people, they are wards of the state, the permanent responsibility of the government.

wow, I just ranted a little. oops. still valid though, assimilate or move to nunavut (territory in the far north essentially reserved for natives)

Its always sad to see such a vibrant way of life go under... not just in America but all over the world..

I bet most of the people here only know of such wonderful peoples through games or random posts like this.

I miss history and learning about things such as this.

You have to admire the concept of tagging an enemy with the stick, which was seen as a greater objective than killing the enemy.

The Europeans did not have this concept, so when a sioux warrior tried this in battle they would be killed.

It`s a sad shame. Thankfully we still have the annual tribal pow wows to get together for.

Yeah, when the Europeans showed up, they weren`t the top ass-kickers around anymore.

I get rather tired of the "noble savage" blanket that is cast over all native Americans. The Sioux and the Comanche in particular were brutal warriors that advanced by conquest of their neighbors. Gee, sound familiar? The Great Zuni Pueblo was burned down by the Utes, who regularly terrorized the Zunis and the Hopis, killing their men and selling their women and children into slavery. Gee, sound familiar? The Mimbres Indians of New Mexico devastated the enviroment along the Gila River where they used to live. Gee, sound familiar?

One also has to consider that few native American peoples ever went three hundred years, even before the Europeans, without major changes to their way of life. Our collective white guilt makes us think we have destroyed their culture, when the fact is that all cultures evolve all the time, including our own...we don`t exactly go around killing Indians anymore. (No, they just get drunk and kill each other...just like the good old days.)

Hollywood says they had a vibrant culture, history doesn`t for a reason.

When you consistently lose, there is a reason, and it isn`t because you were a victim, its because you didn`t adapt.

Think, and stop making fucking excuses.

^^ I hope that`s not how you actually spell. The indignity of a proud warrior being touched by a stick and made a mockery of must be too broad a concept for your feeble brain.

^ History doesn`t have a lot to say about the superiority of native American culture because history is written by the winners. There are more noble goals to strive for than near-genocide, I believe. For instance, before the rise of overly militant white ideals (ala Manifest Destiny), native Americans were the healthiest people in the world. We can assume that because they were the tallest in the world, which means they had the most balanced nutrition. I find that much more meaningful than a repeating rifle or whatever the fuck.

What my ancestors did was no less shameful than the Holocaust. To actually accept the full-scale slaughter of men, women and children for the land under their feet is okay means you have to dehumanize them (calling them savages, one step from animals, etc.), which is exactly the same thing that has been done time and time again in history`s most despicable acts. It`s not like the Sioux ever had a chance against an enemy that has no qualms with sending you disease-ridden blankets as a "peace offering."
