Sorry for the length of the vid, there was just so many questions to answer. I had to drop the resolution to get it to upload as well. Anyhows, hope this answers most of the questions and we will do another if we need to. Good news as well, finally bought a really nice lavalier mic so the audio is going to get better, especially out in the shop. Production values...damned they are expensive!

Heh, thats the part where I am here to take your money :). I do offer classes but there has been two hurdles to my students; time and money. Its hard to take time off to learn and then you have to pay a fair amount to get a proffesional to walk off his job. Thats where this video deal has come in. Students can be a member for fifty bucks (most blacksmith books start at 50) and get access to all the basic vids, there are 15 right now. every month, I add three new videos, one project, one new technique, and one new tool. I love teaching but for me to take off work, rent a facility, haul tools and equipment, etc, its gets pricey and I end up having to charge a hefty bit for just a weekend class. Thats why I`m so pumped about the member site. It allows alot of people access to that information that they would otherwise be unable to get and it supports the making of new videos. To my knowledege, mine is the only site of its kind. How F`ing cool is that?

Havn`t seen any cats lately. But I do appreciate all the great information you are giving us. Quick question for you though. Do you use crucibles for casting anything? If you don`t get to answering this, thank you for reading it. Sorry I started this post before reading the rest of the video. Nice to hear your cats are still trying to get into the limelight.

In a historical context (ie. not including today`s replicas made using superior steels), what would you say is the best engineered sword style in history in terms of what you`d want with you on a battlefield?

(My personal opinion is that it would be the katana, and although they took far too long to make, the characteristic curve in the blade drastically reduced the chances that it would break while making a cut and they were typically a lot sharper than most European blades which were used in a more "hack ,slash, and stab" style)

import, as I said in my earlier post, I had to drop the resolution to get it to upload. Sorry.
Contra- The only thing I cast is silver and gold. I usually am making some accessory for a knife its sheath. Founding steel is a big investment and I have no real need for it.
Pern- To repeat myself, there is no perfect knife/sword. Only the right one for the right job. The katana was a very well made weapon but against plate armor it would have fared poorly. Weapons and armor evoled with each other. Before chain and iron armors, most all swords were curved and slashing weapons but as plate and heavier cut proof armor evolved, blades became sharp and pointy, for penetrating it. "slash" and "stab" are opposite sides of the scale. the more you lean to one, the less effective the other.

For the guys that think carbon knives will just rust away, you can just put a protective coating over the blade. Gun coatings that are heat cured work fantastic, and you can get many colors (for camo) or just regular ol` black. Thios way you protect the knife from oxidation/rust and you won`t scratch it up as much when you start chopping away at stuff.

Some companies coat their knives with really thick coatings, like the Becker line of Camillus knives or Scrapyard knives. Other companies put a smooth coating on such as Strider or Busse. Either of which protect the knives equally, it`s just a matter of taste.

But, as long as you keep a knife clean, and moisture free (when storing) it will not rust. If you leave a little gun oil on your knife when storing it, it will stay like new.

Heey! Great work you are doing here!
Really interesting! And great that you answer so much questions and don`t get offended by those goofbags that don`t see the effort you are putting in creating these videos and answering questions of viewers, and post offensive comments.

Ok now my questions if you find the time to answer them or are capable to answer them.

1. you said you should buy a knife/sword that fits the purpose.
So by buying a "katana" that has been used and stabbed people in the eye for years isn`t really good if you just want it to hang around as "eye candy".

So my question is what if I wanted to buy a katana that has been crafted by hand in a traditional way, for "eye candy" to hang but if circumstances occur that I just can take it off and use it, -how do I know/find out if that katana has really been forged in a traditional manner-.

Because I did a lot of research and have found out that only today a handfull of blacksmiths still forge Samurai Swords in a tradition way and forging 1 sword can take up to a half year or longer.

Don`t know if you have seen this http://spikedhumor.com/articles/101393/How-It-s-Made-Samurai-Sword-Katana.h
tml

It`s really interesting if you haven`t seen it before. Watch out it`s 42 Minutes long. =P

2 Can you forge Katana`s? =P

3 Can you forge Kukri Knifes?
Similar to these
http://www.gurkhas-kukris.com/catalog/product.php?id=3731fc4c1
If you can I would be very interested in buying =P

4 If you can`t do you know a place where I can buy kukri knifes that Meets you quality standards Like your comparison with he bending of it, where 1 would break while yours didn`t. Same goes for the Katana`s, because it`s so hard nowadays to really distinguish a good "presentation" of a product then the quality of the actual product as a "normal" consumer.

5 Is the "technology" of the Samurai sword really inferior to the swords nowadays? because Samurai Swords were considered revolutionary even today "experts" say it`s The perfect sword and well advanced in comparison with any other sword out there.
Seeing your responses I think you would say Yes perfect but for wich purpose? I would say as "eye candy" and as the most durable and sharp sword man made? maybe? =P Whats your opinion about this. Would a genuine Samurai Katana be outscored by a sword from today? Looking at durability, sharpness, etc etc.

Thanks again!
Greets Yifa aka dxeyeb

P.S. Sorry for my English.... Commenting from The Netherlands hehe =P
