Jack Thompson is interviewed on Fox News on Feb. 15, 2008 in regards to the Illinois school shooting. Jack blames video games for the shooting even prior to the first press conference by law enforcement.

This is the same pseudo-science that tries to prove that every evil-du-jour is caused by whatever else they want to demonise:

"Porn causes rape." "Pot is a gateway drug." "Gay marriage destroys families." "Rock music causes school shootings". etc. etc. etc.

So the shooter played video games. I bet he watched Faux News, too. They selectively focus on the minuscule handful of deranged individuals who *happen* to play video games, or *happen* to listen to certain music, then use that to draw false, post hoc ergo propter hoc (`after this, so because of this`), conclusions.

What these folks miss is that a correlation does not mean causation; two things can occur together, might even be related in some way, yet one doesn`t cause the other.

The classic example is red cars. Statistics show that red cars are disproportionately involved in car accidents, compared with other cars - even of the same make and model - of another colour.

Only an idiot (like this ambulance-chasing lawyer or other Faux News talking head) would say that the red paint on the car is somehow responsible for such accidents.

What it does show is that, among all the people who buy red cars, there is a small subsection who choose red because red happens to be a favourite colour of thrill-seeking, fast drivers. It is this thrill-seeking that causes someone to choose a red car, and it is this same thrill-seeking that sometimes causes unsafe driving.

But red paint does not "cause" car accidents any more than these video games "cause" school shootings (or any more than porn "causes" rape, or pot "causes" hard drug use etc. etc.).

Things to consider about him and his arguments:

1. His title: Campus Shooting Expert. What field of study? Sociology? Psychology? Medical School? Bachelors? Masters? Ph.D.? Is he a credible source of information?

2. Violent video game leads to killing people? Harvard? Brain scan studies? Where`s the source? Who`s the study done by? When was it done?

NB: Improper citation of a so-called Harvard brain scan study leads to misinformation. If he had cited them, people may probably have found out the actual information, which is that most of the research done on violence and video games conclude upon a positive CORRELATION, and not CAUSATION.

My own interpretation of the situation is that Jack Thompson is a biased conservative, readily against violent video games. Video games have been a scapegoat for other social inadequacies. Current fact is that we only know that violent video games and violence are correlated. Whether or not violent video games cause violence in real life is still under discussion. What Jack Thompson fails to mention is that people who are violent and aggressive to begin with is also a major contributing factor whether or not they will play a dangerous role in real life. Traumatizing events, genetics, family status, and beliefs are all factors in these events, of which violence in video games also fall under.

Criticize everything.

Water Causes Violent School Shootings!

Recent studies have shown that ALL troubled persons guilty of violent school shootings had large amounts of water in their bodies. Some of these persons had water contents as high as 75%. Obviously this points toward a trend of hydro-addiction that can lead to mental instability and agressiveness.

It is kind of funny that the reason experts always say people perform school shootings isn`t simple and logical. Like, "the shooter seemed to be beaten up and teased every day by his peers at school and the torment became too much so he took his anger out of the peers for tormented him" or "the shooter was depressed" or "the shooter was a socio-path". No its always video games, or heavy metal music, or rap music, or the lack of support for the war in iraq, or obesity, or the increased popularity of the Big Mac. Sometimes, the answer is more simple than we make it out to be.
