Ok I fly paragliders and have been into the sport for a while. The footage you guys are watching is plainly old/vintage CRASH footage. Most paragliding flights are uneventful now days and most accidents are minor. Paragliding accidents both minor and serious still do happen of course but not nearly as frequently as back then. I am not saying the sport is safe...it is `inherently` dangerous as in-it is as safe as you are and make it. Anyone who tells you its safe and nothing can go wrong is lying quite simply. You need to know what you are doing and be confident in your flying abilities. If you want to fly you need to go through extensive training and there are TONS of books, forums, movies and experts that all aim to improve safety. If you are well trained, practice regularly, have fully up to date & DHV certified equipment and fly within your limits you are much more certain to fly safely for MANY years and years to come-One of my instructos has been flying since age 17 and is now 65-still flying regularly. There are strict testing requirements and extensive flight testing, max & min payloads, endurance, collapse recovery tests, etc.. tests for all equipment and thousands of certified instructos out there. The sport is amazingly simple and the most surreal, tranquil and beautiful thing one can experience IMO and is well worth all the training and money. To get started takes about $4-6k TOTAL for new equipment INCLUDING training. Look @ ushga.org or www.paraglidingforum.com as general starting points. If you have any questions just pop on there or ask me here. Paragliders are the only aircraft that can go from being packed in a back pack fiting in an area as small as the front seat of a small car to flying with in a couple minutes!

Thorno I realise this is ancient, I mean look at the Kite at 0:30, the guys wearing a freakin harness.
PG has changed a lot since these days, and is more safe and wayyy fun. Ill upload some kitesurfing footage soon then.
