Law Would Ban Serving Food To Obese

Article Submitted by geoblaze.

JACKSON, Miss. - A state lawmaker wants to ban restaurants from serving food to obese customers — but please, don't be offended. He says he never even expected his plan to become law.

"I was trying to shed a little light on the number one problem in Mississippi," said Republican Rep. John Read of Gautier, who acknowledges that at 5-foot-11 and 230 pounds, he'd probably have a tough time under his own bill.

More than 30 percent of adults in Mississippi are considered it obese, according to a 2007 study by the Trust for America's Health, a research group that focuses on disease prevention.

The state House Public Health Committee chairman, Democrat Steve Holland of Plantersville, said he is going to "shred" the bill.

"It is too oppressive for government to require a restaurant owner to police another human being from their own indiscretions," Holland said Monday.

The bill had no specifics about how obesity would be defined, or how restaurants were supposed to determine if a customer was obese.

Al Stamps, who owns a restaurant in Jackson, said it is "absurd" for the state to consider telling him which customers he can't serve. He and his wife, Kim, do a bustling lunch business at Cool Al's, which serves big burgers — beef or veggie — and specialty foods like "Sassy Momma Sweet Potato Fries."

"There is a better way to deal with health issues than to impose those kind of regulations," Al Stamps said. "I'm sorry — you can't do it by treating adults like children and telling them what they can and cannot eat."

i dont think theyre trying to treat them like children but rather help, but at the same time its like cig smokers gotta let them learn the hard way. plus if fat ppl want theyre social life to be 0 than thats punishment enough. and its good business for restaurants. hey when the world freezes over them fools gonna be the last ones surviving off theyre own fat.

fuck that dude, fat people are major problems in the USA, they are taking up all our hospitals casue we gotta treat their fat asses for heart attacks while people with real problems gotta wait in the lobby, they take up space, and they waste social secuirty so people like you and me are wasting money on something that won`t be around when we get old..

the guy said it was just to get attention on a real problem, he wasn`t trying to get it passed. don`t know why those ppl are offended, unless they`re obese . there`s been stupider things that have been put through legislatures that were for real.

Jesus Christ Vicsand, obese people are just people like you and me, only thicker.

There`s no real reason to hate them, unlike niggers and faggots.

Americans, on the other hand...

i`m fat. not obese... but still.
i laugh my ass off in the winter when all the anorexic twigs are freezing under 4 layers of clothes (which, coincidentally, sounds a lot like santa).
i like to call it insulation.
oh and i live in michigan too.

it IS a problem, but its people`s on damn problem that they can`t control themselves or are too lazy to exercise or anything. a fake bill isn`t gonna make Big Nate get on an exercise plan.

oh, and don`t lump every american into the "fat" category cuz if you`re head isn`t too far up your ass you`ll know not every american is fat.

^ what ever fatty, believe it or not no one cares if you are fat and die from colon cancer, more space on the planet for the rest of us.

I would just like to say that although 30% is OBESE, ie BMI higher than 30, there are even more OVERWEIGHT people (BMI over 25). Over half the country is easily overweight (ie fat) or worse.

If they used the same logic for drug laws they would have no choice but to shred those laws too.

Ok this is pure bullshit.. Granted at 6ft 1, and 215 pounds i have a little bit of a gut. Thats not the problem.. The problem is, in a restuarant, you serve people who pay.. This is discrimination.. I dont care if some fat fuck comes in and orders 10 cheese burgers and 5 orders of fries.. If he pays for it, serve the guy..Sure a good part of america is obese, thats their problem.. But dont discriminate.. Thats just like saying "We dont serve your kind here"

How in the hell did HAWAII end up green? That place has SPAM as a staple food product, which is one of the worst things you can eat.
Not to mention all the weed growing there...

You are not allowed to serve a drunk person alcohol. So why can you not make rules about what fat people can buy to eat?

I don`t see why this is a problem. Changing your eating habits and exercising is just like quiting drugs, with enough self determination its possible to get thinner, the only problem is that most Americans are fucking lazy fat or not.

With that said, this law is easily bypassed. You could just get someone to buy the food for you, that promotes even more laziness. The law should be: Fat people can only get food from stores while riding bicycles...That`ll learn them.
